CLERK'S HEROISM
FIGHT WITH A LION. Heroism of a man who fought a lion with bis bare hand ß while it was attacking his comrade has been disclosed in the London Gazette. The King has approved of the posthumous award of the medal of the Civil Division of the Order of the British Empire to the late Reginald Montague Gray, clerk to .the magistrates in N'gamiland, Bechuaiialand, for gallantry.' The circumstances are officially described as follows:—While on an expedition in August last Mr Gray attempted to save a comrade from a wounded lion. Mr Gray, who had as his only weapon an empty shotgun, clubbed the lion, which had attacked his companion, until the gun broke. He then tried, while kicking the animal, to pull it away with his hands. The lion was eventually shot by a third person. Mr Gray died a few days later as a result of shock.
