THE WOMEN'S INSTITUTE
Popotunoa Wowen's Institute held a special meeting on August 31 in order that members might meet Miss C. Smeaten White, of the staff of the Dunedin Technical High School. Unfortunately the proposed date of Miss White's lecture had to be altered at very short notice, so that the meeting, which was originally intended to have been open to visitors, was not very largely nttended. In the first part of her lecture Miss White dealt with good and bad methods of washing, illustrating her subject by large charts, with pieces of material washed in various ways. She also dealt with stain removals, the members entering into the discussion. Miss White then gave an interesting talk on "Vegetables," dictating numerous simple, and then elaborate, methods of cooking and serving potatoes, greens of all sorts, tomatoes, and leguminous vegetables. Mrs M'Kenzie proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Miss White for her comprehensive and instructive address. V * V
The Waipahi Institute met on August 30 in the local hall. Mra Collins presided over a good attendance. The motto for the afternoon was "It is not the horse, but the oats that draws the cart." The roll call, "A Spring Cleaning Hint," brought forth many useful ideas. The competition—a marble cake—resulted in Miss Jean Brown gaining first place and Mesdames Collins and Madden being second (equal). An exchange market table was held. A fair amount of business was dealt with. The hostesses were Mesdames Symister and Cumming.
