WOMEN'S DIVISION N.Z. FARMERS' UNION

Beaumont Women's Division of the Farmers' Union met on Tuesday to study the Home Science box on "Smocking." It was very successful. During August Misses Johnstone and Fogo gave their demonstration on savouries and sandwiches, introducing several new ideas.

Twenty-one ladies were present at the monthly meeting of the Owaka Valley Women's Division of the Farmers' Union, which was presided over by Mrs Morris. As the secretary, Mrs Capon, was unable to be present, Mrs. M'Gimpsey took her place. The roll call was "Uses for old newspapers." The competition, " Best Article Made From Flourbags," was won by Mrs A. Roger.

The Alexandra branch has held some pleasant meetings. There was an attendance of 36 members to hear Dr Gladstone lecturing on " The Art of Home Nursing." The subject was clearly explained, and the members showed their appreciation by a hearty round of applause. The lecture was followed by an exhibition of antiques which proved very interesting. Of special interest were a sari taken from the Rajah's palace during the Indian Mutiny, a sampler worked by a child of nine 170 years ago, a brocaded silk waistcoat 160 years old, Paisley shawls, and exquisite handwork and china, and a copy of the first issue of the Otago Daily Times. On August 9 the branch held a special meeting, when there was a visit from the Home Science lecturers. These visits are always appreciated very much by the branch, as apart from their own interest they are responsible for gaining new members. On this occasion the visitors were Miss Johnson and Mjss Robins, whose demonstration of sandwich fillings and savouries was followed with the closest interest by the 50 members who attended. In thanking Miss Robins for her delightful address, the president (Mrs Timmings) said that she hoped_ it was the first of many pleasant visits to Alexandra. Mrs Timmings presented Miss Gladys Taylor, one of the members who is leaving the district on the occasion of her marriage, with a suede-covered recipe book, each member of the division bringing forward a favourite recipe, entering and autographing it. Miss Taylor very suitably thanked the members.
