KHAKI CLOTH PIONEER'S DEBTS
MADE AND LOST £381.000. 4 war-time business romance has had nn echo nt the Bradford County Court. Sir James William Buhner, a building contractor at Halifax, started making khaki cloth during the war. Within a year he employed 30 firms making cloth on commission. His capital of £4OO as a builder grew to £381,000. He refused an oiier of £400,000 for his business. Later he suffered heavy losses, and was adjudged bankrupt'with liabilities of £100,475. When he applied for his discharge Sir James stated that not one of his trade creditors had lost a penny. "I gave pledges and honoured them," he declared. " I was given pledges which were not honoured." Discharge was granted subject to 12 months' suspension.
