MILLIONAIRE'S CHOICE
AMERICAN MINING EXPERT TO BECOME BRITISH SUBJECT. After the closest association with Britain over a period of 25 years, Mr Alfred Chester Beatty, a United States millionaire and mining expert, has decided to become a British subject. Mr Beatty announced a few weeks ago that he was applying to the Home Secretary for naturalisation. He remarked, " There is nothing strange in my decision. I have just taken root here. My father is English. I have lived in England for the past 25 years, and my friends are English. My son was educated at Eton and Cambridge, and he married an English girl. In fact, I love everything English, and hope to bo buried here when I die. "Please don't think I've lost any of my love for the United States. I shall keep alive all my interests there, and [ hope to go there as regularly as ever. I believe that the naturalisation, when granted to mo, will automatically include my wife. The point, however, will be divided when she returns from Paris." Mr Beatty is well known as a director of diamond' and copper mines, and has been a leading figure in London for years. Before the war he was associated with Mr Herbert Hoover, ex-President of the United States, in several enterprises. In his spare time he is a collector of Oriental manuscripts. Mrs Beatty is a prominent hostess and racing owner in England and Egypt, and is one of the few women who race under Jockev Club and National Hunt Club rules in England. Their son. Mr A. Chester Beatty, jun., who recently married a stepdaughter of Mr Eoland Oliver, K.C., will remain an American until he applies for naturalisation on his own behalf, as. be is more than 21.
