FRUITGROWERS' CONFERENCE
THE AUSTRALIAN EMBARGO PROTECTIVE TARIFF DESIRED. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, September 7. Regret was expressed by the conference of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers' Federation to-day that negotiations in connection with the Australian fruit embargo did not result in the opening up of the Australian market for New Zealand produce and fruit. It was decided that, in the event of the embargo with Australia being lifted, the federation be instructed to press for a high protective tariff on Australian fresh and canned fruits. On the suggestion of the Hawke's Bay Association it was decided to wait on the general manager of railways with requests, for reductions in railway freights. It was announced that the Fruit Control Board would associate itself officially with the deputation.
