MIGRANTS’ COMPLAINTS
SETTLERS IN VICTORIA PROTEST TO BRITAIN. LONDON, August 21. The Star gives prominence, under the headings, “British Settlers Appeal for Justice,” “Bitter Cry From Victoria,” to a 600-word cablegram from Victorian settlers describing the scheme for the settlement of migrants’ complaints as “ an astonishing piece of chicanery and an unjust and immoral attempt to deprive settlers of their rights, which the British public will not permit when they realise the facts.” The cablegram adds: “Hundreds will return with malice in their hearts toward Australia, where they were cheated and denied justice. The British Government’s imprimatur on future migration projects will carry no validity, a» the scheme contravenes Mr Thomas’s undertaking in the House of Commons that full justice would be done to British nationals.” It is understood that the matter will bo raised in the House of Commons when Parliament resumes.
