When Robert Arthur Cookson, assistant verger at St. Alban’s Church, Teddington, Middlesex, England, was at High Wycombe committed for trial on five charges of stealing church surplices and vestments, he said: “When I see anything of white linen a feeling comes over me that I must have it.” It was stated tliat at Cookson’s home at Teddington, the police found 647 surplices and many other church vestments in a bedroom, A police superintendent said there were 59 charges outstanding.
