MANCHESTER UNITY

The Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge held its fortnightly meeting, N.G. Bro. A. Jenkins presiding. There was a fair attendance of members and visiting brethren. One new member was initiated and one proposition for membership received. In connection with a debate with the Loyal Dunedin Lodge, Bro. Fraser reported that the subject chosen was That the present economic system is doomed to failure, and this should provide material tor an interesting debate. Hand and Heart Lodge would take the affirmative, the following team being selected: —Bros. Draser, Armstrong,'Lucas, and Hope. The secretary of the Loyal United Juvenile Lodge (Bro. Sharpe) stated that the question of a suitable hall for meetings was engaging the attention of the Management Committee, and it was decided to recommend that if possible the Juvenile Lodge should continue to meet in the present hall. The Loyal Princess Mary Lodge held its fortnightly meeting in the Oddfellows’ Hall. There was a good attendance of members, presided over by N.G. Sis. L Douglas. Two were initiated. Business matters were quickly dealt with, after which the members of the Order were entertained at a dance. There was a large attendance of visitors and an enjoyable evening was spent. _ Good music was provided by Bro. Jarvie, and Bro. R. Dickison capably officiated as M.C. Some time ago a team from the Prince of Wales Lodge (Port Chalmers) tried conclusions in a golf match with a team of Dunedin brethren, and the sporting fixture was so successful that a_ return match was arranged. The morning was occupied by a four-ball match, and in the afternoon singles were played, the results being—Dunedin 5, Port Chalmers 1. The draw was as follows (Port Chalmers names first): —P.P.G.M. Bro. W. Crawford v, Bro. Booth, P.G.M. Bro. R. S. Jack v. Bro. Roberts, P.G. Bro. L. Jack v. P.G. Bro. Huntley, Bro. A. Hunter v. P.G. Bro. Lucas, Bro. M'Donald v. Bro, Cook. Bro. Brocklebank v. Bro. Hood. The only Port Chalmers player to register a win was the P.G.M., Bro. Jack. At the conclusion of the matches the P.G.M. thanked the Dunedin members for the return match. It was unanimously decided to make the contest an annual one. , T i The fornightly meeting of the Loyal Tuapeka Pioneer Lodge was held at Lawrence. There was a good attendance of officers and brethren, N.G. Bro. F. J. Gray presiding. Correspondence from a number of members residing out of the district was read, and reports on members on sick funds received. The forthcoming half-yearly district meeting was discussed and the election of delegates was hold over until next lodge night, when it was expected that the business, paper for the meeting: would be to hand. In recognition of his services during his term of office. P.G. Bro. Gunn was presented with a P.G.’s emblematical certificate. The presentation was made by P.G Bro. R. Moore, who expressed the thanks of the lodge, together with the hope that Bro. Gunn would continue to take an active interest in the work of the lodge. Bro. Gunn suitably acknowledged the presentation. Following the closing of the lodge a return card match was played with the members of the local Druids’ Lodge, the visitors again proving victorious. The Lodge Hall of the Loyal Outram Lodge was the scene of a largely-attended function on Monday evening when representatives of the various city and suburban lodges paid an official visit to the local lodge. There was a total attendance of 140 members of the Order. There were also 24 members from the Loyal Mosgiel Lodge, while representatives from Winton. Kaitaneata. and Waikouaiti were present. The District Fxeeutive was represented by P.G.M. Bro. R. S. •Tack and P.P.G AT. Bro. C. L, Calvert. The N.G.. Bro. Irving, presided and a welcome to the visitors was extended by P.G. Bro. Barclay. The P.G.M.. in responding to the toast, said he had visited Outram a month ago when a degree meeting had been held in the local lodge, and he had met many members on that occasion. The response to the present visit was very pleasing and although Outram was somewhat isolated he would like to see more visits from the citv lodges. Bro. Calvert also responded. He stated that the prov. cor. secretary, the prov. treasurer. and a district trustee proposed visiting Wellington in order to confer with the registrar of Friendly Societies on the question of the unappropriated surplus of the district. Officers of the visitinnr lodges also responded. The lodge was then adjourned, and several brethren contributed acceptable vocal and instrumental items. Following this supper was served and later the floor was cleared end the function was concluded with a dance.
