TAPANUI NOTES

(From Odr Own Correspondent.). TAPANUI, September «. BOROUGH COUNCIL. ■ The monthly meeting •of the Tapanui Borough Council was held on Monday evening, and was attended'by the Mayor (Mr J. S. Varcoe), Councillors J. L. Wylie, D. A. M'Donald, W. Brims. W. B. Naylor, R. Duff, D. Keir, and W. Wright. The secretary: of' the Tapanui Presby- < terian Church Choir forwarded the .sum of £7> 10s, the net proceeds of. the recent choir Contest," to be used, in paying the unemployed who have been working at the church grounds under subsidy.—Received. Mr E. H. Murney wrote, advising that the Tuapeka County Council- had , {instructed' the engineer and! himself to inspect and report cm the proposed footpath leading from the.borough boundary to the hospital.—lt was agreed: that the ’matter be left in the bands, of - the .Works: Committee,: and that : it should-meet. and confer with the county, representatives. f Mr F. D. Grant. Tuapeka County engineer, stated in regard to tree felling by the local unemployed, that as the", class of work was ; a greater risk < than ; ordinary labour,’ which was provided’ : for , by the Unemployment Board.-the'council should coyer the ■! men so etnplbyed against this ' extra risk.—lt was decided to hold the matter over until, next meeting, the town clerk in the: meantime to ascertain; the cost for * coyering' .any men employed in cutting trees. The secretary of the Tapanui -Horticultural Society -wrote stating that as a result. of the revised charges for rental of the Town Hall, his society would have-to pay an increase for the use of the hall and asked that a reduced charge he fixed. , —The matter was referred to the Hail Committee. -

A statement of the ■ financial-position of the council to August 31 was read .by the town clerk,, which showed arrears of rents, rates, etc., for : the ■ year ended March 31 to be,£l7B 14s 9d. The total receipts in the 1 district fund, account were £B5l 6s 3d, which included £303 I4s 6d credit balance at the beginning„ of -the ■ year, and the 1 expenditure £Bos'’ 7s 9d, leaving a credit balance of £45. 8s 6d. : The account was at present , in' credit, and. it would not' be. necessary to have a bank overdraft in the meantime. . - It was decided that the Public' Trustee be again written to in regard to the over, hanging hedge in Bushy Hill street,, stating that if the work were not.completed within 14‘days it. would be , done, by the council at the Public TrusteeV expense; It was resolved that: the ■ Town Hall could be booked only, through the town clerk in future. The town, clerk was authorised to communicate with the Tuapeka County and endeavour to secure the use of the county’s scarifier for the purpose of improving the main highway through the borough.' The reports of the Works, Reserves, and Hall Committees were all adopted. Accounts amounting to £B2 Os 4d were passed for payment. M.U.1.0.0.F, The monthly meeting of the Loyal Tapanni Lodge was held on Thursday evening, when N.G. Bro. W. Hancox occupied the chair. There was a large attendance of members. The lodge was in mourning for Bro. F. Pringle, who died recently at Dunedin, and the members paid a tribute to his memory by standing in silence. The secretary was instructed to forward letters of sympathy to his widow'and relatives and also a letter. of sympathy to P.G. Bro. T. H. Edwards (trustee) on the death of Mrs Edwards/ Two new members were proposed. The election took place of delegates for the half-yearly district meeting to be held at Dunedin this month. The following were elected:—N.G. Bro. W. Hancox, Per. Sec. P.G. BrO. E. Arnold; P.G. Bro. Peter Thomson, and P.G. Bro. E. M'Auley. A committee was appointed' to make arrangements for the annual ball to be held on October 6. It was resolved that Per, Sec. Bro. E. Arnold’s photograph and biography be forwarded for insertion in the 1933-34 Otago District Hand Book. ■*■■■■■ GOLF. Under ideal conditions, the Ladies’ Golf Club played a Medal Match on Saturday, with the following results:-—Mrs E. H. Clark, 90 (16), 74; , Miss A, Grant, 113 (30), 77; Miss 0. Robertson, 114 (36), 78; Mrs E. J. Robertson, 94 (15)„, 79; Miss Dale, 119 (35), 84; Mrs M. Robertson, 120 (36), 84; Miss Howat, HO (25), 85; Miss Murncy, 121 (36), 85; Mies D. ; FOOTBALL. The West Otago Sub-union brought its season-to a cloais on Saturday, when the 'final - -of the knock-out competition was plaved ou the Ta'panui ground between Heriot and Tapanui. The ground was in good order. Both sides were far from being at full strength, quite a number of junior players taking part in the game.
