CYCLING

OTAGO AMATEUR CLUB Last Saturday’s race from Milton to Green Island was held under good conditions, the riders having a slight head, wind all the way and the road being in fair order. E. Fletcher'secured an easy -Win from Paul and Brown, both of , Milton, who were Second and third respectively. The handicapper was -.too liberal -with Fletcher, who rode off the Qmin.-mark, as he has done record time for this race. J. Hamilton, considering the- short time he has been training, rode a good race to fill fourth place. V. Laws and B. Oakes rode disappointingly. Laws being- dropped early in the race, while Oakes held on. until Saddle Hill. ,13. Smart is now showing a gmnpse of ms last year’s form. and. put in a fine sprint to head the back-markers home. . it. Blair, starting off 7mip alone, teamed , well with the smin bunch after being picked up by them at Clarendon, and did Ins share of the hard work. A. Oakes started off with A. Blackie, who had the pusfortune to have a puncture at Clarendon, leaving Oakes to ride on. his own. J 3.0 was soon caught by the scratch men. D. Gray found the going hard on . the metal road, but was moving along at: a steady pace after he reached the tarsealing. J. M'Gregor also found the going hard, but should be among the placmgs on the Taieri next Saturday. , This race will- be held over a. course four times round the 11-mile block at Mosgiel. MWright, of Milton, shows .every likelihood of being a rider well above the average. He has plenty of pace and should make a good track rider. Brown and Paul, also of Milton, are two riders who can. be depended upon to do their the pacemaking. Saddle Hill proved to be their undoing. F. Greenfield was expected to show up to advantage in the Milton Race, but soon found that he was conceding too big a handicap to the middle-markers.
