GREEN ISLAND BOROUGH

MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Green Island Borough Council was held last night. There were present the Mayor (Mr W. 0. Smellie), Crs G. Orange, T. Tomkins, J. C. Russell, H. Taylor, P. Winders, V. Pringle, F. Wright, W. A. Miller, and T. M'Ahan. RESERVES COMMITTEE. The Cemetery and Reserves Committee recommended that the section at the corner of Binnie street and Abbotsford road and portion of Miller Park in the vicinity of the Kaikorai Stream be planted out in grass—The recommendation was approved. WATER AND LIGHTING. The Water and Lighting Committee recommended that consideration of the changeover of the lighting system be deferred; that the installation of a light opposite the Concord School be considered when other applications came before the council; that the application for water supply for Mr S. Y. Smellie be declined. , ~ The engineer advised that the foreman's report detailed the small amount of repair work required to the services since the last report. The system was in good order, and had not given any trouble. An extension in Shumla street had been carried out to supply a new residence being erected there,, and, as it was suggested that another residence would probably be erected in thi ß street, it was considered advisable to carry the three-quarter-inch service to the top of the hill.—The report was adopted. WORKS COMMITTEE. The Works Committee recommended that protective railings be placed on the turns of the track on the lower portion of Dall street; that notices to fence land be served on owners of property abutting on to Dall street between Neill street and the Main road; that the engineers recommendation as to portion' ot the borough to be zoned for a brick area be adopted; that the Dunedm Saleyards Company be notified of the alternative proposals for forming an entrance to the ealeyards, and asking for the co-operation and support of the company in this connection; that the engineer be asked to submit a report on the alignment and boundary lines of street, that drainage works he carried out opposite the property of Mr C. M'Mullan, Neill street, and corner of Prosser street and the Main road—The report was adopted, with the exception of the clause referring to the reports of the borough engineer and the foreman of works in refard to Exeter street which was re- . ferred back to the committee for further consideration.—Crs Taylor and Tomkins objected to the undertaking of work in Exeter street, as it had not come before the council.

FINANCE REPORT. The Finance Committee recommended that accounts be passed for payment as follows:—District Fund, £IOB3 16s; unemployment loan, £144 0s 2d. The committee also recommended that the report on temporary loans be received, and that the town clerk be authorised to raise up to £SOO by way of temporary loans The report was adopted. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The borough engineer reported that repairs to the shoulders and the necessary cartage of material had been carried out on the Concord section of the main highway, and the whole length generally was in fair order. Arrangements had been made with the Public Works Department for the U6e of its marking machine, and the white centre line would be renewed during the incoming period. The Green Island-Taieri Mouth highway had been kept in good running order by the material being kept in place, and in the absence of the power grader the work had been done by the unemployed. Specifications for buildings to the value ot £I3OO had been examined and recommended to the town clerk for the issue of building permits. The asphalting or the Main road footpath between. Rosss corner and the foot of Lookout Point had made good progress considering that some of the kerbing had to be realigned and made of a permauent or semi-permanent nature. He wa ß increasing the number of men there in order to put more workmen under the immediate control ot Mr Moffitt. The footpath in front of Bushs store and to the railway overbridge had been completed and the road - formation brouuht up to the required level. Itie footpath in Neville street from Pressor street to William street had been surfaced with gravel and the street had been much improved. The Mam road footpath had been asphalted from Reids toChurch street, and material was on^ hand to repair the asphalting between Reids and School street. In Shand street the asphalting had been completed to Church street. Some difficulty was met here in connection with drainage, and special care was taken to convey the water clear from the foundations of the asphalt. ihe ashphalting of Muir street had also been completed. In Abbotsford roadthe wood kerbing had been finished, and the necessary filling was now being done, after which same will be surfaced In the North Taieri road the concrete kerbing and channelling from Exeter to Sickels had been completed, and a start made to continue the kerbing nelling to Paterson street. In street the wood kerbing on one side had been constructed and the path surfaced with Silverstream gravel.. The footway from Neill street to Main South road, befog a continuation of Dall street was first surfaced with ashes and ballast from Fernhill was now being spread. It would appear that after some traffic the larger stones would have to be removed and finer material used. In Shipka street formation work had been done, and a light coating of ashes was .spread. m Bmnie street an entrance, with the necessary protective handrailing, had been made for Mrs Berry. The Runciman street bridge required repairs to the handrailing, and this had been earned out. The deviation of the Kaikora Stream was practically completed. Ear) street bridge bad been dismantled and the filling across the old creek bed was being attended to. The timber from the bridge was found to be in a bad state of decay, and could not be used for any. other works in the borough. The format on of a footpath along Neill street was in hand. An estimate had been submittted to the Taieri .County Council for the surfacing of District road and tue extension of the main culvert. lfle estimate amounts to £44. The question of zoning a brick area had again been given further consideration. He recommended that the area bounded by Church street the Walton Park railway line to a line being the production of the southern boundary of Runciman street and to the Kaikorai Stream on tbe west be established as a brick area. The report was approved.
