QUEEN CARNIVAL

POSITION OF CANDIDATES SPORTS QUEEN TAKES LEAD As the result of the payment into the Sports Queen's Fund of a large sum yesterday the positions of the candidates in the competition have been materially altered. The Sports Queen has now taken the lead, being followed by the Civic Qneen, with the " Cinema " Queen third, and the Services Queen fourth. The following were the positions at noon yesterday: — Sports Queen (Mrs R. Hudson) . . 1 Civic Queen (Miss Billie Mitchell) 2 "Cinema" Queen (Mrs R. S. Black) 3 Services Queen (Mrs Norah Ross) 4 " CINEMA " QUEEN Another of the highly attractive and financially successful occasions with which Mr Stuart Pitt has sought to swell the funds of the "Cinema" Queen was held in the Embassy Salon last evening, when about 50 couples enjoyed a delightful evening's dancing and entertainment. The hall was tastefully decorated and the programme provided met with universal approval. It was an informal dance arranged and conducted by the manage* ment "of the Empire Theatre in an effort to augment the funds of the " Cinema Queen (Mrs R. S. Black) who was among those present. Mrs Black addressed the gathering at the close and thanked those present for the evidence they furnished of wholehearted support for her cause. A tasty supper provided mainly through the efforts of the house staff of the Empire Theatre was generally relished and aa a result of the effort the funds of the " Cinema " Queen will benefit substantially. SERVICES QUEEN If the sale of tickets and gallery seats for the Services ball continues as at present, the success of this function is a foregone conclusion. The arrangements which the committee is now completing assure patrons of an evenings enjoyment, since, instead of the normal military, naval, or regimental ball, examples of which have proved annual successes in the past, there will be offered a combined effort by all the forces of the district. Some idea of the nature of the programme may be gained by those fortunate enough to have attended services in the past, where the brilliant spectacle of glittering uniforms, in blue, scarlet, gold, and the solid backing of the service drab, have blended with the gay frocks of the ladies. A competition offering a valuable prize includes the gallery ticket holders. The musical side of the programme will be well catered for, Schoficld's New Collegians' Band, supported by the Ambassadors' Dance Band, supplying the modern numbers, and the Military Band of the Ist Battalion, Otago Regiment, rendering waltzes, square dances, and other old-time numbers. The poster parade in itself will be an evenings entertainment, and some interesting historical tableaux will be included in the display. COSTER BALL Of the many spectacular and enjoyable balls that have been organised in connection with the Queen Carnival, the moat

attractive promises to be the Coster Ball, upon the arrangements for which a special sub-committee from the Civic Queen's supporters has been concentrating for some time past. As progress reports on the decorations, costumes, and other appurtenances are made, the promise appears to be a sound one. It is not intended to reveal details until all are completed, .but it can be said now that while the coster section will be specially catered for, those dancers who attend in other than coster costume may rest assured that their efforts will also help in the general scheme. Appropriate ballets are being arranged for, and even the supper will fit in with the occasion. Those who have had the opportunity of studying the real " 'Arry and 'Arriet on 'Ainpstead 'Eath" will no doubt have a complete knowledge of their peculiarities, and others will probably have picked up something of their quaintness from the representations of such characters that have been seen hero. There should be plenty of scope in the competition which is to be held at the ball, and for which prizes are to be given for the best impersonation of the coster, male and female. From to-morrow there will be on view in the window of Messrs Arthur Barnett, Ltd., specimens of coster costumes which may be obtained, or which may be used as models. The dance music for the ball will be supplied by Schofield's Collegians' Band, and the programme will include old-time, as well as modern dances.
