“TWISTED TEACHING”

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Mr Thorby seems determined to make it appear that we condemn the School Journal as disloyal, whereas we consider the paper as a whole a very sound publication. The poem in question was adversely commented on, and publicly so. As Mr Thorby has seen the Press from which we quoted he will see that the Auckland headmaster, referred to by the Press, asserted that certain masters and professors had condemned the publication of that poem as subversive. This public condemnation appeared in the Press, and that is all we said. Mr Thorby evidently has not read our letter carefully, because he asks us for information about a Red teachers’ organisation in New Zehland. We know of none, nor have we ever said one existed. The organisation we quoted was in England, and was so said to be. In conclusion. we wish Mr Thorby to realise that we do not charge the teachers of New Zealand with being disloyal. They have proved their loyalty in more ways than one, and such a charge would be ridiculous. But there is a small minority of their number whose opinions of our Empire and Flag are certainly not those of loyal British citizens, and the effect on the children in these cases has raised some alarm in the minds of parents. —We are, etc. New Zealand Welfare League. August 4.
