CONDITIONS IMPROVING

MINISTER’S OPTIMISM CHRISTCHURCH WINTER SHOW. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 6. “Upon such an occasion as this one Is expected to make some allusion to certain conditions and future prospects, I suppose some of you are expecting me to say we have turned the corner, but I am going to avoid that particular expression and confine myself to the statement that, generally speaking, matters are improving,V said the Acting Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr J. G. Cobbe) when opening the Christchurch Winter Show and Exhibition last evening. “I am pleased to say they are improving slowly, and I sincerely hope the improvement will be steady. We don’t want any more booma in New Zealand, and we don’t want an era of excessively high prices, but there is just enough sunshine to be seen in the working affairs of the country today to take away some of the ammunition of those who love to talk of gloomy outlooks , and possible disasters to come.” Mr Cobbe said it was a mistake to/ suppose that the Government was not interested in local manufacturing industries. Although many members of the Government were farmers, most of them had had some association with business and some had spent their lives at business. All of them recognised that the manufacturing industries filled a big place in our national life. The show itself supports in a measure the Minister’s optimism. It is considered the best display of manufactures ever assembled in Christchurch, and the show is certainly an interesting and attractive display. All the available space was booked weeks before the opening, and yesterday the attendance was more than 1000 bigger than the opening day last year.
