A MEMORIAL SERVICE

UNITED FRIENDLY SOCIETIES PARADE AT ST. MATTHEW’S CHURCH. - ‘ About 400 representatives of various lodges were present at the evening service at St. Matthew’s Church yesterday, when the annual church parade of the United Friendly Societies, which is hold each year on the Sunday nearest the date of the Declaration of War in 1914, was held. The parade marched to the church, headed by the St. Kilda Municipal Rand, which led the singing of the “ Old Hundredth ” at the commencement of the service and the National Anthem at the close. The Rev. W. A. Hamblett took as the subject of his address Timothy ii, 1-10— “ Jesus Christ abolished death and brought immortality to life through the Gospel.” He endeavoured to show the advantage this had given the people of the world. None of the great religious leaders had ever been able to tell what took place after death, but Christ Himself knew. He had died and had been resurrected, and so had brought a new influence into the world. The lessons were read by Messrs G. Clark and L. Martin, and Mr Axel Newton officiated at the organ.
