THE OTAGO HARBOUR BOARD

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — I am amazed to learn from your correspondent “ Economy ” in to-day’s issue of your paper that it has been suggested that the engineering work of the board should be under the control of the mechanical engineer. Sir John Coode many years ago reported on the harbour entrance. When portion of his advice had been acted on, a wonderful improvement was made in the depth on the bar. As the years went on the various engineers under the board’s control continued more or less to carry on the successful engineering policy laid down by Sir John Coode. Surely the present members are not going to take the grave risk of putting the engineering work required at the Mole in charge of a mechanical engineer. Mr Blair Mason was admittedly an able' and outstanding engineer and successfully maintained a satisfactory depth at the entrance. The present engineer, Mr J. M’Gregor Wilkie, was trained under Mr Mason. His past work shows he is a valuable servant of the board, with an undoubted knowledge of the problems of the entrance and channel, and his services, in my opinion, should certainly be retained.— l am, etc., Ex-Memder. Dunedin, August 3.
