UNATTRACTIVE SHOP EXTERIORS

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Would it be possible to start a campaign of spring cleaning the exteriors, at least, of the shops in some of the suburbs of Dunedin? Princes and George streets being the main thoroughfares, the shopkeepers have to keep up a good appearance. But take some of the outlying places on, say, the South road. .There are one or two up-to-date shops there, but most of them look as though their owners had not spent anything on them for 20 or 30 years. The shopkeepers complain of the people going into town to do their shopping, but can they wonder if their shops do not look attractive. There is a whole line of shops that gives me an intense feeling of depression and 1 prefer to pay the tram fare into town and go where the shops are bright and clean. I am sure many housewives feel the same. It is wonderful what a difference a coat of paint makes. Perhaps the Government will start the ball rolling by having the Railway Station buildings and the Police Station painted^— I am, etc., X 1 Z. Dunedin, August 2.
