QUEEN CARNIVAL

POSITIONS OF CANDIDATES The following was the position of the candidates in the Queen Carnival at noon yesterday: — Civic Queen (Miss B. Mitchell) .. .. 1 Sports Queen (Mrs R. Hudson) .... 2 “Cinema” Queen (Mrs R. S. Black) 3 Services Queen (Mrs Nora Ross) .. 4 MEETING OF EXECUTIVE A meeting of the executive of the Queen Carnival was held last evening, Mr J. J. Marlow being in the chair. The recommendation from the General Committee that the closing hour of the competition be 11 p.m. instead of midnight oh the final day was adopted. A deputation from the Sports Queen committee waited upon the executive asking that the closing date be extended to September 10. —After considerable discussion it was decided that the members of the executive confer with the General Committee at the latter’s meeting next Tuesday, with a view to coming to a final decision in this matter.

The deputation also stressed the advantage of making the street collection on August 11 a competitive matter in lieu of a combined effort, and that each queen committee be permitted to retain all moneys collected by its representatives on that day. —It was resolved to carry out the collection on these lines and to permit the sale of buttons and competition tickets. It was reported that Messrs Thomson and Co. had placed their pony team at the disposal of the executive, each queen committee to have the use of it for a week at a time.—Accepted with thanks. The executive expressed strongly the opinion that the price of the decorative buttons which are being sold should be the same in the case of each queen. It was resolved to appoint a special committee consisting ■of a representative of each queen committee to arrange the details for a combined demonstration on the final night of the competition. CIVIC QUEEN.

The various competitions organised by the Civic Queen Committee are receiving excellent support, and several have already been decided. The tramways section of the Civic Queen’s Committee has arranged for a card party in the South Dunedin Town Hall next Tuesday evening. A concert will be presented in the Town Hall on Sunday next, commencing at 8.15 p.m. The programme has been arranged by the city organist (Dr V. E. Galway), who has enlisted the support of the Royal Dunedin Male Choir, Miss Gaynor Paapc, Mr Alfred Walmsley, and Mr J. E. R. Benton in 12 very attractive items.

“ CINEMA ” QUEEN COMMITTEE, SUNDAY EVENING CONCERT.

At the concert to be held in the Empire Theatre on Sunday night, proceedings will be opened with an overture played by the Dunedin Orphans’ Club orchestra, assisted by Mr Knight Barnett at the Christie organ. An item of particular interest will he the playing of two numbers by the Orphans’ Orchestra augmented by Dagg’s Band, which will convey some idea of the compelling force of a well-balanced orchestra. .Rehearsals which have taken place give some idea of the tingle which animates the toes, and the finished article which will be ■given at the Sunday concert will convince listeners of the efficacy of orchestral syncopation. The direction of the combined orchestras is in the capable hands of ATr Arthur G. Frost, and during the item to be rendered on the stage Miss Daphne Murdoch will demonstrate a surprise number.

The bureau opened by the’“Cinema” Queen Committee at 140 George street has proved a boon to those in search of information, and the number of inquirers attended to has amply repaid the committee for its efforts. Owing to the demand for tickets for the “ Cinema ” Ball from outside districts being greater than was, expected, it may be necessary for flic sale locally to be closed on Thursday next. Those who cannot attend at the ball should take advantage of the opportunity given at the Sunday evening concert to hear the class of music which will delight those more fortunately placed.

SPORTS QUEEN. The Sports Queen’s Ladies’ Committee reported to the executive on Wednesday night that a substantial increase in business had been experienced at the George street shop, but there was difficulty in keeping the shelves stocked over the week-ends.
