WOMEN’S DIVISION N.Z. FARMERS’ UNION.

A special meeting of the Upper Waitaki branch of the Women's Division, New Zealand Farmers’ Union, was held on Wednesday afternoon, the president (Mrs Cleave) presiding. A demonstration on “Alteration and use of commercial patterns” was given by Miss Johnson, assisted by Miss Robins, of the Dunedin Home Science Extension Bureau, with examples of the latest fashions to demonstrate from. Examples of wool dyeing and scouring in all colours wore also presented, as well as a demonstration on the spinning and carding of wool on a carding machine, at the conclusion of which the speakers were accorded a hearty vote of thanks, * :*! Pembroke, situated amid gorgeous Jake and mountain scenery, was the venue for the July meeting of the Hawea Flat Women’s Division, whfin members to the number of 43 were presided over by Mrs Allison, who also welcomed 15 visitors to the meeting. Business of a routine nature was conducted, after which Miss Ballantyne gave an interesting demonstration on “ Basket and tray-making from cane,” It was decided to hold a dance during the coming month in aid of the funds. The hostesses for ■ the afternoon were Mcsdames Anderson, Bovett, and Ballantyne, and Miss Phyllis Allison.

The monthly meeting of the CambrianSt. Bathans branch was held in the Cambrian School, at which there was a fair attendance of members. A competition, “A Duet Cap,” was judged, the winner being Mrs Decide. The box for the afternoon was *' Gift Suggestions,” and the members spent the rest of the afternoon looking.at the articles and discussing ways and means of making them, finally coming to the conclusion that it was one of the best “ boxes ” that had been sent. Three of the younger members —Misses M‘Gregor, Harley, and Shaw —were hostesses.

At the July meeting, held at Mrs Richards' residence, the Glenledi-Akatore branch decided that in future the general meeting and the quarterly home science lecture held in that particular month, should coincide, and being more convenient in a scattered district, where evening meetings were held. Reference was made by the president (Mrs Hollnmby) to the loss suffered by the branch jn the departure from the district of Misses Ussher and Bates, two keenly enthusiastic members. The good wishes of all members follow them in their new spheres of work. One new member was enrolled. The roll call was “ Nursery Rhymes.” when several clever drawings and impersonations were shown. The box for Ihe evening was on the subject of “ Stuffed Toys,” and elicited an amount of interest, members taking patterns and imbibing ideas. A *’ General Knowledge ” competition and an amusing game enlivened the evening. The hostesses were Misses Inglis, Waters, and Ussher. The Tahatika branch met on July 19, Mrs Callender presiding. The branch decided to join the British Drama League. Mrs Olson won the competition, the articles entered being given to the local Maternity Home. The roll call was answered by a “ Party Game,” and the box on “ Poultry ” proved very interesting. Mrs Bradfield was the hostess for the afternoon. During the month the Tahatika branch combined with the Farmers’ Union in holding a combined social evening, to which members of the Owaka Valley branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union were invited. An enjoyable evening was spent with games and dancing, interspersed with songs. During the evening, the president (Mrs Callander), in an anproviate speech, congratulated Owaka Valley on its venture in forming a branch, and wished it every success. _ At the same time, she took the opportunity of presenting Mrs Woodrow, the late secretary of Tahatika, with a handbag as a small token of appreciation of the work so ably done by her in her term of office. Mrs Morris in a neat speech replied on behalf of Owaka Valley, and Mrs Woodrow also suitably replied.
