RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES

The conditions were mild for training work at Riccarton. The outside of the course proper provided good galloping ground, though slow after the rain earlier in the week. As a result no fast times were registered. Few horses jumped, but this department was disappointing. Elude and Southdown ran half a mile in Slsec; Acceptable six furlongs in lmin 20 2-sscc. Martian Chief, picked up by Top Rank, ran seven furlongs in train 33 2-ssec. Haere Tonu just beat Water Polo over half a mile in 51 4-ssec. Liege Lord, with the assistance of Meprisant, ran half a mile in 52sec; Nightly and St. Joan six furlongs in, train 20sec. Tea Garden doing the same in lmin 19 4-ssec, and Chrysology in train 19sec. Pharetra ran the half-mile in 52 l-ssoc.

Cottesmore, Strong Light, and Chief Light finished a gallop over seven furlongs in that order in lmin 32 3-ssec. Silver Ring ran seven furlongs easily in lmin 36 2-ssec. Cricket Bat and Drumfire galloped six furlongs in lmin 19sec. Bright Red and Fiat Lux were evenly matched over live furlongs, completed in lmin 5 3-ssee. Ranelagh ami Uurlinghain ran seven furlongs in lmin 34,sec, while Errantry, Sweet Agnes, and Pharaoh did live furlongs in lmin 5 3-ssec, Sky I ass the half-mile in 54 3-ssec. and Dorian and Charmeuse seven furlongs in lmin 37soc. Silver Sight and Some Shambles ran six furlongs in lmin 21scc; Hounslow and Marquillo the same in lmin 22 3-ssec. Polydora and Shatter ran seven furlongs in lmin 32sce, and wore on terms at the finish. Double Shot van five furlongs in lmin 0 2-ssoc. Rational II taking Imm 8 3-ssoc. Lady Zephyr galloped half a mile in 53sec, and Bright Shade and Natural the same in like time. Cranford did seven furlongs alone in lmin 32sec, and Ramo the mile in lmin 46 3-ssoc, Solwit assisting for the last five furlongs. Wise Choice and Jaloux did six furlongs together in lmin 19 3-ssec. King Comet gave a brilliant exhibition over four hurdles with Royal Limoiul. who also jumped well. Joie de Val started with (hem. hut save an indifferent display. Billy Boy, Gay Jim, Thurina. and High Pilch went out for a school once round tlie course proper. Billy Boy refused at the first of the kennels double.

The others went on over the sod wall, but High Pitch fell at the top of the straight, where Gay Jim pulled up; this being all he wasintended to do. Thurina continued alone, finishing over Cutts’s. He gave a fine display. A. E. Ellis rode him, and will have the mount for the Grand National. Billy Boy subsequently jumped the kennels double the reverse way, then .the sod wall at the top, and came home on the flat. His exhibition was similar to what he did when schooled last year.

Speakeasy gave a fine display once round the country course proper. Dukla started with lump hut refused at the first of the kennels double. He got oyer .after several attempts, in one of which he lost his .rider. He then jumped the sod wall, but ran off at the brush at the top of the straight. Yesterday’s arrivals from the north were Prince of Orange, Lucess, Joie de Val, Quebec, Paleta, Kaokaoroa. Except Joie- de Val, who jumped, all did light tasks. Copey. Callamart, Rasouli, Adventus, Omeo, Henry of Navarre, Normandy, Jen, Cylinder, Epigram, Cyclonic, Bay Tree, Luna Lux, and Playground arrived from the north this morning.
