The only thing, in his opinion, would populate Northern Australia with whites would be Hie finding of gold there, said Lord Luke, when presiding at a meeting of Estates Control, Ltd. Some people, he went on, apparently expected that Northern Australia was going to blossom like the rose, but the alternative to a gold find appeared to bo a sparse population based on pastoral interests. Referring to the high costs of cattle production in the far north, Lord Luka (who is chairman of Bovril, Ltd.) said £IOO,OOO spent in improving stock routes and making wells, particularly between the Northern Territory and Wyndhani, would probably be the most helpful development step the authorities could take.
