Y.M.G.A. FAIR
AN AUSPICIOUS OPENING The special effort at present being made by the Y.M.C.A, for the purpose of raising funds for the balancing of that organisation’s budget had a most auspicious opening yesterday afternoon when the Mayor (the Rev. E. T. Cox) commended the occasion to the citizenry of .Dunedin in a whole-hearted manner. The special effort took the form of a winter fair at which all manner of household and luxury goods were offered. The funds so raised will be used to reimburse the association for the extra expenditure that has been caused by the special facilities provided for the benefit of unemployed youths. The organisers have every reason to be proud of the response that has been made to their appeal by all sections of the community. The Mayor declared the fair open and on behalf of the citizens of Dunedin wished it every success. He referred to the widespread international ramifications of the association, and suggested that everyone in Dunedin must realise the invaluable work the association was doing among the youth of the country. Mr J. L. Salmond (chairman of the board of directors of the Y.M.C.A., stressed the value of the work the local organisation was doing, and said that the present objective of that body was well worth supporting.
Throughout the afternoon and evening there was a steady’stream of customers at the various stalls, and it is hoped that the interest that was displayed at the opening session will be repeated this afternoon and this evening at the sessions that have been arranged for those periods. The committee wishes especially to thank the numerous firms and private individuals that have contributed to the selling capacities of the various stalls. Every reasonable request has been granted and as a result the association has a supply of goods that must prove a tempting attraction to householders laying in week-end supplies.
