THE DUNEDIN HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —In your issue of the 22nd ult. “Progress” suggested that six specialists named by him should be asked to contribute paragraphs periodically to the press dealing with their particular subjects, with a view to keeping the society prominent in the eyes of the public. I replied that the carnations should he added to the list named by “ Progress ” and a periodical paragraph on the successful cultivation of the carnation contributed by Mr Cousins. In his second letter in your issue of the 31st ult. “ Progress ” suggested that I should approach the Horticultural Society with a view to creating a class for carnations in the forthcoming schedule. I can assure “ Progress ’’ I am not going to interfere with the work of the Horticultural Society in any way. It w'il) have to do its own work. My desire is that expert information be given through the press to all those who are interested in the cultivation* of flowers. “ Progress ” brought his letter to an end by stating that other flowers than those quoted by him would be considered according to their value as exhibits. If so, I cannot imagine the carnation being excluded. It has been exhibited with the most gratifying results at the principal shows in the United Kingdom. It is not well to make comparison with other flowers, as all have their varied beauties, but the carnation surpasses most garden floivers in its handsome appearance as a hardy garden plant, and in the long lasting quality of the bowers when cut from the plants and used for room decoration. In this respect it is superior to the rose.—l am, etc., August 2. Carnation.
