OXFORD COUNTY’S CHARM.
Mr John Buchan, M.P., in a speech at the annual meeting of the Oxfordshire branch of the Council for the Preservation of Rural England, complained that Oxfordshire was overshadowed by Oxford. “ You cannot preserve the stones of Oxford,” Mr Buchan said, "without preserving part of the shire; but I am not sure that the converse is true. I think you could preserve the shire without Oxford. Too many people are apt to regard the county as a mere unimportant appendage to a famous city, but if you destroyed the city you would still have a shire of and surpassing beauty. " Though only 60 miles from London, the shire has a wonderful number of unspoiled and sequestered villages, and Oxfordshire is, 1 think, one part of the country which is free from the worst kind of vandalism. In no other part of the country has our organisation a fairer and more noble field for its efforts than this county of ours."
