TAINUI SCHOOL
ENJOYABIE ENTERTAINMENT
The entertainment held in the Marigold Salon, Anderson’s Bay, last night, in aid of the Tainui School funds, was a very bright and enjoyable one. The first part of the programme was contributed by leading Dunedin artists, and the popular vocal and musical itoma met with the hearty approval of the audience. The second half of the programme was just as enjoyable as the first, the items being contributed by members of the Dunedin Orphans’ Club, known as the Merrymakers’ Pierrot Troupe. The Anderson’s Bay Orchestra, under the conductorship of Mr R. Wallace, lent colour to the programme. On behalf of the School Committee, the chairman (Mr W. Mills) expressed sincere thanks to the audience for attending in such largo numbers. It was the committee’s first big effort, and the ready response to the appeal, as indicated by the sale of tickets, encouraged the- committee in the belief that it would receive the hearty co-operation of the residents throughout the year. He wished to express the committee appreciation of the willingness of all who assisted in the appeal for funds, and all those who had assisted in the preparations for the entertainment. The residents were already aware that the School Committee was finding it increasingly difficult to procure funds necessary for meeting the ordinary demands of the school, and it was now necessary to rely almost wholly on the generosity and sympathetic interest of the people of the district. The headmaster of the school (Mr A. Hanna) expressed appreciation of the splendid programme presented. He commended the energy and enthusiasm of the School Committee in the effort to raise funds to meet the expenses connected with the maintenance of the school, and for the fine spirit of co-operation shown. He heartily thanked the committee on behalf of the teaching staff and the children. The programme was opened by the orchestra with a perfect rendering of the overture, “ Orpheus in der Untermelt, The dancing by girls from the Moonshine Winter Gardens Cabaret was a feature, and items were given in fine style by Mr J. E. Davies (vocal solos). Messrs Kerr .(cornet duet), Miss Evelyn Shepard (vocal solos). Miss Leonore Mackenzie (humorous recitations), Mr A. Walmsley (songs), and Mr H. M. Eggers (ventnoquial item).
