QUEEN CARNIVAL

—^ POSITIONS OF CANDIDATES Civic Queen (Miss B. Mitchell) ..I “Cinema” Queen (Mrs R. S, Black) 2 Services Queen (Mrs Nora Nogs) .. 3 Sports Queen (Mrs R, Hudson) .. 4 Progress results will be posted daily at the E. P. and L. Department’s premises in Cumberland street, and the Civic Queen display shop in the T. and 6. Buildings. GENERAL COMMITTEE. At a meeting of the Queen Carnival General Committee, the matter of the closing hour of the competition was again renewed, and it was decided to recoin* ] mend to the executive that the hour be I II pan. and not midnight, on September j 9, as previously decided upon. This de- ' cision was influenced by the probability tliat large numbers of people would , wish to stay in town to hear the final j result, and that facilities should be j given them to reach their homes before midnight. I The question of the street collection j on August 11 also aroused considerable i discussion, and it was agreed that it would be preferable for each queen committee to be given credit for the amount collected at its allotted stand, instead of pooling the total and dividing it equally. It was thought that this introduction of the competitive spirit would be beneficial. AMUSEMENT PARK. Arrangements have been made for the Civic Queen committee to have control of the Amusement Park in the Town Hall basement on Wednesday and Saturday evenings and the Services Queen committee on Thursdays and Fridays. The usual arrangement under which the Services Queen committee has charge on Friday and Saturday evenings will operate this week, “CINEMA” QUEEN. Owing to the large number of inquiries being received by members of the “ Cinema ” Queen committee regarding the Queen Carnival, it was decided to open a bureau at 140 George street, near Messrs Islip and Watt, and there has since been a continuous stream of inquirers. The majority of visitors have shown their appreciation of the facilities offered by the “ Cinema ” Queen committee by cither buying a badge or assisting in other directions. Advantage has been taken of the window space to display some of the donations received, and these are a never-failing source of interest. That there is remarkable interest shown in the “Cinema” Ball is proved by the number of inquiries for tickets, which 1 are obtainable at the bureau. SERVICES QUEEN. The Services Queen committee has arranged a progressive games evening to bo held at the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association rooms next Tuesday. SPORTS QUEEN. During the war, when Mrs Hudson was the Soldiers’ Queen, she published a cookery book, and it has been decided by the Sports Queen Committee to publish another, more up-to-date edition in aid of the Sports Queen committee’s funds. This publication will 1 be on sale to-morrow. On September 2, I the Otago Rugby Union, with other ■ sports bodies, proposes to hold a field ; day in support of the Queen. A bridge drive, organised by the Otago Croquet Association, will be held in the Tudor Hall next Thursday evening. - - ---* I
