FIXTURES FOR SATURDAY , v Otago.—Semi-finals of Knock-out Compe-

tition. St. Clair. —Quarter finals of Knock-out Competition, The Otago Club’s Knock-out Competition has now reached the semi-final stages, the fifth round matches having been played last Saturday in good weather. H. J. Pollock, after his good showing in the previous rounds, met his match on Saturday when J. G. Dick, who played sound golf, defeated him by 3 and 1. Dick is a goo'd match player and is playing better now than he has been for some time. J. M. Sidey is by way of being a favourite for the final. On Saturday he defeated R. A. Lucas by 3 and 1. The match between Sidey and Dick next Saturday should be an interesting one. B. N. Wright found that C. P. Howden’s handicap was too much for _ him and went down by 4 and 3. Wright, who is a plus man, has performed miracles to have reached this stage of the competition, but it was al.most inevitable that he would sooner or later meet a long handicap man who, not being over-awed by the reputation of his opponent, would play sufficiently below his handicap to make Wright’s best efforts unavailing, ST. ANDREWS CROSS The St. Andrew’s Cross Bogey Handicap played at Balraacewen was well . patronised by those players who had been eliminated in the previous rounds of the Knock-out Competition. Winter conditions make it difficult to make much of an impression on bogey. J. C. Shand and R. M. Rutherford were the only two seniors to beat bogey and they tied with 1 up. The former was in receipt of eight strokes and the latter six. E. A. Reed, who plays on a handicap of 2, had a good round to finish all square us did R. R. Aspinall and G, R. Ritchie. In the juniors P. W. S. Riley, who played from the limit handicap of a stroke a hole, finished 3 up, and won easily, the next best card showing a‘ return of “all square.” J ST. CLAIR CLUB The Knock-out Competition for the Paterson Cup was continued by the St. Clair Club on Saturday, and after the fourth round only eight players remain. I. H. Penrose has had a number of verj close games, one of which at least required an extra round.. On Saturday he defeated L. T. M'Cormack, who had acquired an enviable reputation, and was by way of being a favourite. S. 6; Cook was too good for C. G. Davey, and won comfortably by 3 and 2. A. H. Myles finished all square with W. D. M'Carthy after a. battle royal in which no quarter was given or taken. C. B. Wight again demonstrated his matchwinning qualities by defeating A. P. Johnston, to whom he had to concede a large number of strokes. D. C v Bennie is another low marker who, by excellent golf, has survived the attacks of players more fortunately handicapped. He defeated H. J. Aitken on Saturday after a very good game by 2 up. A. Lawrence had the better of the game with W. M'Ghie almost from the start, and won fairly comfortably by 3 and 2. The match between W. N. Satterthwaite and H.' Boock had the distinction of having the biggest margin. Satterthwaite was playing well below his handicap and had no difficulty in establishing a big lead on Boock to win by 6 up and 5. The matches to be played next baturday should result in one or two very good games. W. N. Satterthwaite and A. Lawrence’s encounter should not oe barren of incident, as these players are not unaccustomed to each other s style of play. ■
