DEFENCE SYSTEM
RUMOUR REGARDING COMPULSION MINISTER'S EMPHATIC DENIAL. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, July 31. Associated with the recent reports of the complete reorganisation of the New Zeala'nd defence forces has been a rumour that the territorial system, with compulsory parades, would again be instituted. In an interview the Minister of Defence (Mr J. G. Cobbe) repudiated any such suggestion. "Certainly not on my part," declared the Minister when it was suggested that the volunteer system might shortly disappear. "There is no reason for such a change," he continued. "Recruiting has been extremely satisfactory. I gave 'the details of the position some weeks ago and since then a small increase in the 'number of recruits has been reported. A 3 a matter of fact we have some corps up to full strength, and there is one instance in the South Island where they have 20 men on the waiting list. We are quite satisfied with the system and the possibility of doing away with it has not been thought of by the Government.
