THE KUROW DISTRICT
MINISTER OF PUBLIC WORKS. (Per United Press Association.) W AIM ATE, July 31. The Minister of Public Works (Mr J. Bitchener) inspected the Hydro works to-day, accompanied by Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P., and the Enginocr-in-Chief of the Public Works Department (Mr C. J. M'Kenzie). The parly was conducted over the works by the engineer (Mr R. H. Pack wood). The chief work at present is the excavation for the Otago coffer dam. Rock has been reached in places, and concreting will probably be started in three or four weeks. The engineer hopes to be above flood level by December, when work can be proceeded without fears of a flood. Mr Packwood remarked that they had been very fortunate with the weather, and illness among the men had not been so prevalent this winter as previously. Mr Bitchener will leave for Christchurch to-morrow.
