AID FOR RELIEF DEPOT

AN ENJOYABLE CONCERT . An unusually attractive programme wag presented at a concert held in the Concert Chamber, Town Hall, last night for the purpose of raising funds rot the ladies’ section of the No. 4 relief depot. South Dunedin, The programme was opened with a half-hour Maori entertainment by the Bt. Clair Concert Party. The members were in Maori costume, and the stage was ap-. propriately decorated, fern trees and a Maori house giving an atmosphere of realism to the scene. The members contributed a number of Maori songs and concluded with a rousing haka, the effort evoking enthusiastic applause. Humour was given a prominent place in the pfogamme. The burlesque, “Boy Soprano,” by Mr W. de Clive Lowe was received with delight, and both Mr F. H. Dampen and Mr R. Wilson-Brown provided humor- ' ous interludes. Miss Molly Baker’s, two , humorous recitations, “If Life Were a Play” and “Giggles,” were warmly received. The Returned Soldiers’ Choir and several well-known singers contributed to the musical side of the programme. With the assistance of the choir Miss Ruth . Perry sang the soprano solo “MaUreen,” an Irish cradle song, and she also contributed as a solo “Tally Ho.” The ; choir, conducted by Mr J. T. Leech, was heard in the part song “The Border Ballad.” Miss Bertha Rawlinson’s contralto solos, including “Three Fishers,” , were generously applauded, and apprecia- ‘ tion was also shown of the tenor solo, “ Your Tiny Hand is Frozen,” by Mr John Kennedy. Variety was given to the programme by the efforts’ of the Marimba Xylophone Quartet and the Bellringers. Knox College' students, in appropriate costumes, made a very welcome contribution of sea chanties. A tap dance by .* Messrs T. Burton and C. M'Queen and a spectacular effort by a ballet composed by Mr Stan. Lawson were among the most enjoyable items. Mr Dampen was in charge of the programme, and introduced characteristic humour into his announcements.
