At the opening of the fourth of the series of ■wool sales 11,102 bales were offered, including 4939 from New Zealand, About 6104. bales were sold. There was a crowded attendance, with active.and welldistributed , Yorkshire and Continental competition. The bulk of the offerings was cleared at higher rates compared with the closing prices of the last series. Merinos were 20 to 25 per cent, up; line crossbreds, 20 per cent, higher; medium and coarse, 15 to 20 per cent.; and slipes, 20 to 25 per cent. New Zealand greasy halfbred, “ Stanley Downs,” top price, ISJd, average 13,-id; halfbred lamb slipe, “Belfast,” 15Jd and 15Jd. There was a full attendance at the opening of the sales to-day, competition by Home, Continental, and American buyers being active. THE SHARE MARKET DUNEDIN STOCK EXCHANGE Business in Bank of Australasias at £lO 15s was reported on the Dunedin Stock Exchange yesterday, and National Bank of Australasias ivere turned over at £l3 Is. There were no further quotations lor these shares. Business was reported in contributing Southland Frozen Meats at £1 3s 6d. further offers of 3d less finding sellers firm at £1 4s 3d. Donagliy’s were dealt in at fl 19s, this being sellers’ quotation when further offers of £1 Is were forward. Milburn Limes continued _to improve, and there is now an unsupplied buyer forward at £1 10s. Gillespie’s ivere turned over at Is 6|d, further offers of the same figure finding sellers firm at Is 7d. There were two sales of Cornish Points at 6cl, and the shares are now on offer at that price, buyers offering s*cl. Nokomaia improved sharply, business being clone at 4s. The market dosed with a buyer at 3s lOd and a seller at 4s. Bell-Kilgours were placed on the official list yesterday, and sales took place at Is 2d (seven) and Is lid. The latter figure ivas the closing offer, sellers demanding Is 2d.

ADDINGTON STOCK SALE FAT SHEEP FIRMER. (Pee United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, July 5. Fat sheep, especially the beet types, were firmer at the Addington market today, and with fat lambs had the best sale of the season. Fat cattle were in short supply, and also advanced on late rates. The demand for good store sheep and lambs continues keen, values firming. Store Sheep.—There was a big yarding, with Marlborough lines forward. Good ewe lambs were firmer, and medium ewes with some condition were very firm. Inferior lines were neglected. Values were: Good ewe Jambs, 12s 6d to 14s fid; medium, 10a to Us; ordinary, to 9g fid; good wether lambs, 9s to 10s fid; ordinary, 7s to 8s 9d; good sound-mouthed halfbred ewes, lls to 13g 9d; ordinary, 7s fid to 9s; good two-tooth halfbred ewes, to 15s 3d; ordinary, to 12s fid; aged and inferior, 2s to ss. Fat Lambs.—The entry numbered 1450, with a big portion of ill-finished sorts. It was a good sale, with a firmer tendency. Best ewes and wethers were firmer, but light sorts were cheaper owing to the restricted operations of the export buyers. MINING CRUDE OIL ENGINES FOR GOLDMINING. The application of the crude oil engine to mining projects in New Zealand is growing, since it has been found that in those districts where severe winter curtails operations because of freezing the work can go on unhampered. The engines allow of work in all seasons. Two 150 h.p. vertical airless injection crude oil engines have just been supplied to the Nevis Diesel Electric Gold Mining Company, and the engines will be_ used to generate power for a dredge which is being reconstructed in Dunedin. It is the first time these engines will be used in New Zealand for this particular work, though a 114 h.p. engine of the horizontal type for pumping water for sluicing at Waikaka has been supplied.

SALE OF SHEEP PROPERTY Messrs Donald Reid and Co., Ltd., report having sold on Tuesday on behalf of Mr Duncan Leishman, as mortgagee, pasturage license No. 1615, situated near Poolburn, consisting of 20,900 acres, together with 6000 sheep, cattle, and horses, and also implements and sundries. The property was known to be a first-class safe block of sheep country, and. as the sale was practically unreserved, it attracted a large number of buyers. Bidding commenced at £7OOO, and rose quickly under keen competition from several buyers, to £12,150, at, which price it fell to the bid of Mrs Jane M'Lennan.
