MRS THOMSON’S FUNERAL The funeral of Mrs G.‘ Thomson, who died suddenly at Port Chalmers on Monday afternoon, . took place yesterday afternoon, the body being interred in the new cemetery. The funeral, was largely attended, among those present being members of the Port Chalmers Old Identities’ Association, of which Mrs Thomson was a life member, and members of the Borough Council. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. J. G. Dunn, minister of the Port Chalmers Presbyterian Church. NEW SAWYER’S BAY CHURCH The foundation stone of the new Presbyterian Church at Sawyers’ Bay will be laid next Sunday afternoon. The Rev. G. Dunn will preside, and will be assisted by Mr Douglas Spence, student in charge of the congregation, and by the Revs. D. C, Herron and R. G. M'Dowall, representing the Dunedin Presbytery. Mrs John Watson, of Port Chalmers, has consented to lay the foundation stone. The original church, which was destroyed by fire last New Year’s Eve, was built in 1912, the foundation stone being laid in January of that year by the late Captain William Thomson, an elder _of the Port Chalmers Presbyterian Church, who also laid the foundation stone 50 years ago of the present Presbyterian Church at Port Chalmers. The contractor of the Sawyers’ Bay Church is pushing ahead with the new building, which should be ready for services by the end of September. RELIEF WORKERS’ CONCERT The entertainment to be given in the Laurier Theatre to-night in aid of the Port Chalmers relief workers’ depot promises to be one of the best held at Port Chalmers for some time past. The concert will be under the direction-of Mr G. F. Mirams, and the performers will number 16, and will include such well-known performers as Miss Price (soprano), Miss Bond (contralto), Mr C. Dunbar (tenor), Mr E. Ottrey (bass), Miss Judd (violinist), Misses Christie and Mofl'at, and Messrs Payne and M'Gregor (elocutionists), and pupils from the Lily Stevens school of dancing. The whole of the proceeds from the entertainment will bo devoted to'the relief depot. PRESBYTERIAN MEN’S SOCIETY The Presbyterian Men’s Society met on Tuesday evening, when there was a large attendance to hear a lecture by Mr K. M'Donald, of Povtobello, on “The New Economies.” Mr M'Donald, accompanied by a number of friends, came by special invitation to open up some discussion on social credit, and spoke on “ The Growth of Machinery,” and the “ History of Money,” illustrating his subject by a number of charts, which had been accurately prepared. Questions and discussion followed, after which a very hearty vote of thanks to Mr M'Donald and the visitors was carried on the motion of Dr Edgar, seconded by Mr A. L. Cassie.
