WEST HARBOUR BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the West Harbour Borough Council was held last night, and was attended by the Mayor (Mr T. IT. Harridge), Crs A. Smith. A. D. Asher, C. J. Hayward, F. W. Venn, T. F. Rodger, E. J. Taylor, J. M. Kay, and W. Forgie. RAILWAY MATTERS. The district traffic manager for the Railways Department, in reply to the council's letter in connection with railway matters, stated that the cancellation of Sunday train services between Dunedin and Port Chalmers, as in other parts of the Dominion, was due to lack of patronage by the residents. Sunday trains had been operated at a loss. The substitution of bus services had met the requirements of Sunday travel in the Dunedin-Port Chalmers area, but, having regard to the entirely different conditions governing the conveyance of passenger traffic by the two forms of transport, the department was not prepared to agree to the adoption of a policy involving the interchange of rai] and bus tickets. So far as season ticket-holders were concerned, there was no obligation on the department to maintain unprofitable Sunday train services solely on their account, and it was therefore regretted that such tickets could not be recognised as available for travel by the buses. Cr Hayward said that the aim of the deputation which waited on the district traffic manager was to get season tickets interchangeable with the buses, but it was quite evident that the deputation had not succeeded. He was disappointed with the result of the effort. The deputation could not do any more, and it was evident that the council could not get any further. As one of the .deputation, the Mayor said the requests made to the department were reasonable, and he was disappointed with the reply. FERTILISER FOR RELIEF WORKERS. The Mayor intimated that the Dominion Fertiliser Company had informed him that sufficient fertiliser for the season would be supplied to the West Harbour relief workers for their gardens.—lt was decided that the company be thanked for its generous contribution. . CORRESPONDENCE. The secretary of the Otago Hospital Board advised that the levy for. the West Harbour Borough for the current year had been fixed at £579 16s 4d.—Councillors expressed surprise that the levy had been raised by £4O, but the town clerk assured them that he knew the additional charge was coming. v The Otago Hospital Board advised that a grant ot £lO had been made, towards the depot" established in the borough in connection with relief for the unemployed. —The letter was received, the Mayor stating that arrangements would be made to put the money to good use. The town* clerk of Dunedin advised that the City. Council's Reserves Committee had agreed to permit the West Harbour unemployed to take out a strip of manuka on the line of the existing track leading to the top of the Signal Hill scenic reserve. The track could be cleared for half a chain in width, but the cutting would have to be done under supervision, and it would be necessary for the council to place a reliable man on the work, who would see that the conditions were strictly adhered to. In no circumstances were any other native trees to be touched or damaged in any way.—The Mayor said the cutting of the manuka would be supervised by a reliable man. The district engineer for the Railways Department acknowledged the decision of the council in regard to the transfer of portion of the railway reserve between Ravensbourne and St. Leonards. It had been agreed that if the present road fences were maintained in good order no further fencing would be required, be-, tween the road and the railway reserves. —The borough engineer advised that in his opinion the position was satisfactory to the borough, provided that the quesftion of the maintenance of the fences referred only to those parcels of land which were now to be transferred to the borough. He suggested that acceptance be made on the terms set out by the railways engineer.—The council det cided to accept the terms- . > The Department of Internal Affairs adr vised that an allocation-from the proceeds of art union No. 23 was being made to the West Harbour Borough on the same basia as that which applied to the previous art unions. A remittance would be forwarded accordingly.—The Mayor said the amount to be forwarded would be slightly more than £24, but he hoped.it would exceed that figure. GENERAL.
