THE OAMARU MEETING

There should be some interesting racing to-day at the Oamaru JoCkey Club’s Winter meeting, as the fields on the card look fairly open and likely to provide a good medium of betting. Quinopal, who tops the list in the Hack and Hunters Steeplechase, has, been off the scene for some time, but on his record would be regarded as dangerous if ready to reproduce form. Backers may, however, prefer something with recent form, and in this they will have a wide selection. The going is likely to be fairly firm, and this will suit Barrington better than the soft ground on which he had to race at Wingatui. With Polling Day, Royal Saxon, Night Cap, and Antrim Boy in the field, it should be a sound run race. Polling Day might find the dis; tance a bit beyond him, particularly if sent out to the front to win all the way. Night Cap finished strongly when he won at Timaru, and the extra distance should not trouble him. He finished over two lengths in front of Antrim Boy, who hit the last hurdle, and now meets the latter on 111 b worse terms over the extra halfmile. Polling Day comes in on 91b better terms. Royal Saxon finished fourth iu the Wingatui Steeplechase, after slightly ricking himself -when racing about a mile from home. He meets Barrington on 331 b better terms, as he carried 81b overweight at Wingatui. There may not bn much inclination to fancy any of the light weights, and the order, of favouritism may be Antrim Boy, Night Cap, and Royal Saxon. Unless some of those engaged in the Novice Stakes have trained on since they were last seen in public there will be no great reason to fancy their chance. Adult beat a moderate field at the South Canterbury Hunt meeting held last winter, and he is the only winner in the field. Some Shambles ran second to Errantry at Timaru, and this form will probably make him favourite. Quite Soon was fourth to Moueygran. Garnish, and'Natoruis in the Novice Stakes at Wingatui, where Last Link did not show up in any of his engagements. Last Link has apparently improved, ae he is being mentioned in connection with the Oamaru race. Some Shambles may start favourite, with Adult and Quite Soon next in demand. Polydora has what will be a luxurious weight to her after her recent wins under 9.11 and 10.2. She is up against the strongest opposition tackled up to date, but under 8.0 should be able to run a fairly smart mile. Merry Peel lias been shaping Well in his recent engagements. He was a close second at Ashburton with 9.6 to Palantua S.l at the end of seven furlongs in 1.26, with Ranelagh 9.5 and Grecian Prince S.l 1 amongst the unplaced. Merry Peel is now, up to 9.10, but should beat all those

he met at Ashburton. Salmo Salar now looks very well, and seems to have improved since the Dunedin winter meeting, where he ran second to ■ Zeebrugge in the Invermay Handicap and - won the Birthday Handicap. Still, he looks a bit close to the top-weights over a distance a shade short for him. Salmo Salar will, however, take some beating. Mount Boa fails when expected, and sometimes wins when least expected. He can always unwind a good run if well handicapped. Steeton shaped well at Timaru, and may take some beating over the distance, but the others have no recent form to recommend them, except that Kakara may get into the picture at the finish. Polydora, Merry Peel, and Ranelagh may be the order of favouritism. Silver Sight reads as most likely to be the popular pick for the Winter Hack Handicap, with Palmary and High Speed also fancied. The card will _ conclude with the Farewell Handicap, in which those most in demand may be Grand Finale, Repudiation, and Reminder. RACING IN ENGLAND PRINCE OF WALES STAKES.
