WIMBLEDON TOURNEY

M'GRATH DEFEATED BY LEE VINES AND GLEDHILL BEATEN SUCCESS OF AUSTRALIAN PAIR (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, June 28. The Australians provided to-day’s thrill at Wimbledon, when Turnbull and Quist, in their debut on the nerve-testing centre court, decisively crushed the American Doubles champions,. whom the committee ranked the second best pair in the tournament,. They frequently made the giant Vines look mediocre.- The match was notable for the Australians’ display of grit when they were two sets in, arrears, sending the spectators into transports of delight. Turnbull was the star of the match, hitting spectacular winners, pouncing on short lobs and killing them instantaneously, and rattling the Americans. Quist improved towards the end and ably supported his partner. Gledhill made few errors, but Vines was erratic. , Crawford played beautiful and aggressive tennis against Gentien, exploiting every stroke and' 'scoring winners all round the court. f J ' M‘Grath found Lee too vigorous, resourceful, and persistent in retrieving. M‘Grath was never able to settle down and could do nothing against the serving and driving onslaught. He was beaten within ! nn hour. Stedman had a two-hour struggle against Condon. He was so distressed at the end of the third set that he sent the ball boy for successive cups of tea “ with plenty of sugar.” He derived sufficient stimulation to survive, and although he was behind love-three in the fifth set, he won six games in a row for the match.

Stedman maintained the splendid form he has shown by defeating J. H. Condon, the well-known South African player, in a long five-set match. Condon, who is a fine, all-round, attacking player, has represented South Africa on several occasions in the Davis Cup, and in 1929 when a British team visited South Africa he gained victories over Austin, Gregory sind Collins, Crawford had an easy win over the French player Gentien, but his youthful team-mate went down to H; G. N. Lee in straight sets. Lee is a very solid and experienced player who at different times has defeated a number of leading players; including Lacoste, Borotra and G. M. Lott. The chief surprise of the day was the victory of Turnbull and Quist 'over the American Doubles champions, Vines and Gledhill, who won the first two sets but after that were overwhelmed by the Australians. If Turnbull and Quist maintain their form Crawford’s problem of a Doubles team for the Davis Cup match against. Britain will be solved. This match and some of his earlier games suggest. that Vines is not showing his best Jorm and that he may be hard pressed to retain his Singles title. *
