OTAHUHU WORKSHOPS
RECENT INCREASE OF STAFF MR STERLING GIVES REASONS. (Per United Press Association.) , WELLINGTON, June 29. In an interview the chairman of the Railways Board (Mr H. H. Sterling) explained to-day regarding the taking on of additional staff at Otahuhu that this was a usual occurrence at this time of the financial year. “The programme of work required to be done each year is drawn up and made to fit the finance found available,” Mr Sterling said. “As soon as the programme is approved each year, it is actively pursued, and the staff increased as may he necessary. The programme tliis year is somewhat more extensive than last year, due to the large number of replacements being made, and improvements decided upon in the quantity and type of rolling stock, particularly in connection with trucks for the carriage of livestock and produce. Improvements of the passenger stock will also Be actively pursued, particularly in the direction of removing the longitudinal seats from second class cars, and substituting chair seats. This increased activity will also apply to Otahuhu and Addington, which are the two workshops at which this class of work is done.”
