WHEAT TO FREE MILLS

TO THE EDITOR.

Sa—ln his last letter Mr A. L. Steven declines to publish figures giving the capacity of his mill or the allocation of wheat allowed to him by the board. He considers they are his private concern. It is a pity he will not give them for then the public would, know just how badly he was being treated. Both Mr Steven .and Mr 1 Begg contend there is nothing in .the arrangement made with the Wheat Board that millers would take early delivery of, their whole years supply of wheat. I have taken the trouble to take out the figures for the mills in South Otago. The figures set out are the number of sacks delivered from January to June 24 in each year: Year. Sacks. 1929 .. .. .. 13,916 1930 12,459 . 1931 .. .. 9.201 1932 .. .. .. 12,285 1933 18,806 The figures for 1933 are all the more impressive when consideration is given to the fact that the Star Milling Company was not operating in the preceding years. The figures may be verified by anyone who wighes to examine them. _ Mr Steven may rest assured that the operations of his mill, whether run for eight or 24 hours daily, will not make .00 difference to importations of flour. All the business Mr Steven may get must come from other mills and the public will not benefit in any way. He wants to get sufficient- wheat to run full time day and night- and to sell his products at exactly the same price as that of the unfortunate organisation which he and Mr Begg so roundly condemn. The observer” may judge Mr Steven’s concern for the welfare of the public.—l am, etc.. Gore, June 27. D. S. Mackenzie.
