CALEDONIAN BOWLING CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Caledonian Bowling Club was held in the club’s pavilion last night, the president (Mr W. G. Lloyd) presiding over an attendance of about 40 members. Prior to commencement of the business the chairman referred to the deaths during the year of four, of the club’s members —Messrs A. Bennett, W. Duuford, R. Brown, and J. E. Snelling—and those present stood in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of the deceased. ANNUAL REPORT. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, the chairman congratulated the club on having passed through such a successful year. The membership hail been well maintained and 14 new members bad been enrolled. Fifteen rinks were again entered in the Saturday competition so as to enable as many members as possible to get a game, and to the selectors (Messrs L. J. Edwards and G. C. Claridge) the thanks of all members were due for the efficient manner in which they had carried out their duties. Although it had had a particularly strenuous season, the green had maintained a magnificent playing surface, and this reflected great credit on the green supervisor (Mr A. Summerell) and Mr C. Lyng, to both of whom the club tendered its thanks and appreciation for the service they had given. The green-keeper (Mr J. Casey) was also to be congratulated on his work during the year. Considering the difficult times through which the community was passing, • the finances of the club were in a fairly healthy state, and the credit balance of £sl I7s lOd was a creditable achievement and a tribute to the efficient work of the treasurer (Mr W. Latham). In conclusion he tendered his sincere thanks to the executive and the members for the assistance and loyal co-operation they had given him during his year ot office, and he hoped that the coming season would be in every way as successful as the past one had been. Mr J. Seddon seconded the motion. \ Mr R. C. Procter referred to a clause in the report which stated that the executive had declined any nominations for honorary membership on account of the honorary list being full. The rule covering honorary members had been adopted by the members of the club, and in bis opinion the committee bad taken up an ( entirely wrong attitude with regard to this matter. Ke thought that the club should accept all the honorary members it could get. Mr V. Cavanagh commented on the club tie competition, and said that he thought the final of this competition should be played in the daytime instead of under electric light as had been the case during the past two seasons. Replying to Mr Procter, the president said that he had found, during his term on the Executive Committee, that honorary members were more or less of a nuisance. and too big a list of such members left openings for some players to have the use of the green at a cheaper rate than playing members. Mr Procter said it was bis, idea that the executive instead of making a ruling that the club should have no more honorary members should bring before the members some recommendation that would clearly define the status of an honorary member and what privileges he should be granted. With regard to Mr Cavanagh’p remarks, the chairman pointed out that the final of the club ties had to be played to suit the convenience of all the finalists. It was frequently the case that only a proportion of the players in the finals were able to get along in time for games to be completed in daylight. The report was adopted. INTERCLUB BANNER COMPETITION. The following remit, which the Caversham Club proposes submitting to the annual meeting of the Dunedin Centre, was submitted, with the request that the club support it: —“ That in future all Saturdays from the opening of the playing season till the Saturday preceding Easter be devoted to the interclub championship competition, with the exception of the usual Christmas-New Year holiday break, and the dates set aside for the champion of champions game, the Adess Shield competition, and Sullivan Day.” A list of suggested fixtures for the forthcoming season, providing for 14 banner matches (weather permitting) was submitted by Mr G. A. Nelson for the club’s approval. Both proposals were discussed, and it was finally decided to instruct the club’s delegates to the centre to support the Caversham Club’s remit. MINIMUM SIZE OF BOWLS.

Through the secretary of the Dunedin Centre (Mr Hanning) there came before the meeting a letter from Mr G. A. Nelson stating that the time was opportune for the New Zealand Council to give consideration to the question of the size and weight of bowls to be used in competition throughout the Dominion, and suggesting that the Dunedin Centre endeavour to have introduced legislation that will assist in eliminating the use of specially small and heavy balls. The club’s delegates were instructed to support the proposals contained in Mr Nelson’s letter. On the motion of Dir E. Beatson, seconded by Mr A. Honeyman. it was decided that it be a recommendation to the incoming executive that in future tournaments any player found using bowls not drawing the requisite amount of green be disqualified for the tournament.
