A meeting convened by the Caversham School Committee with the object of raising funds for school improvements was held on Monday evening. The chairman (Mr T. A. Brown) presided over an enthusiastic attendance of about 50 persons, representing the following bodies: —Caversham School, Ex-Pupils’ Association, Social Club, Caversham Association Football Club, Hockey Club, Juvenile Forresters’ Lodge, ,Caversham Ratepayers’ Association, and the School Committee. It was decided to hold a queen carnival and fair on October 4,5,6, and ;,7, six queens to take part! The various organisatins represented promised ? their hearty support, and after a good deal of discussion as to the mariner of conducting the fixture it was decided to hold a further meeting on Monday, July 10, when the various arrangements would be finalised. On Saturday evening last the Boys’ Brigade Old Boys’ Band held a solo contest arid concert programme. The band, under the conductorship of Mr James Dixon, opened the programme with the march “ Invercargill,” followed by the hymn “Deep Harmony.” Fifteen bandsmen faced the judge (Mr James Dixon) in the solo contest, which resulted as follows:—Euphonium, F. Carter (“O Lovely Night”), 1; cornet, A. Mackay (“Alice, Where Art Thou”), 2; euphonium, Ai Duncan, (“ Down the Vale”), 3. Mr Dixon, in hjs remarks, said that he was somewhat disappointed iri the • solo work he had heard, and ad-, vised the soloists on future occasions, to give more thought to' the selection Of solos suitable for their -particular instrument. The Rev. H. E. Edridge, in presenting the medals, complimented the winning soloists arid expressed his pleasure at the progress made by the band since its first contest 12 months ago, and at the same time made mention of the splendid service which was being so willingly given by Mr Dixon. During the evening vocal items were provided by Miss : Feitchly and Mr M'Crilloch, while Miss M. Randle was a popular entertainer with three elocutionary items. Miss R. Price, the official accompanist to the band was the 'recipient of a small gift in appreciation of the willing services rendered by her. The band played the selection, “ Carisbrooke” while the judge was making up his marks at the completiori of the contest, under the conductorship of Mr C. Millar. The thanks of the band were expressed to the accompanists, Mies Price and Mrs C. Millar, and to Mr C. Millar;, who carried out the duties of stage manager. : A meeting of the Dunedin branch of the New Zealand No More \Jfar Movement was held oh June 24. Mr J. Turner was in. the chair. Correspondence having been dealt with, arrangements were madq for a public meeting in July, and the subject decided on was “ Education and War.” It was decided to ask the City Council to remove the guns from the gardens and reserves as they encouraged a tendency to glorify militarisrii. It was further resolved to ask the Dominion Executive to; endeavour .to arrange a peace 'essay competition amongst the school childsen of the Dominion. The chairman then gave a short address 'on the attitude of members in the event of war. An interesting and animated discussion followed. The subject chosen for the next meeting was “The Value of Organisations in War Resistance.”
