TROTTING

' By Sentinel. It is estimated that 10,000 people were on the grounds for the final day of the Auckland : Trotting Club’s winter meetbalance sheets of the Metropolitan Trotting: Club and the 1 Canterbury Park Trotting Club show conclusively that the light-harness sport in Canterbury is so strongly situated as to defy . defeat- even in the long days of depression. A horse galloping past the post shall not be treated in any respect : different than if he broke in any other part of the race provided reasonable efforts are made to bring; him back to correct gait..: That is the spirit of trotting law. A morse galloped* past the . post at, Auckland and was disqualified. . ... , T On a charge of interfering With Nell Volo in the Members’ at, Epsom, A'. W. Broughton, driver of Billy Garbine, was - fined £lO. Nell Volo s display was remarkable!'for, after losing much ground at the start, and breaking about two and a-hal£ furlongs from home (eavs “Abydos”). she made a fine run to dead-heat for first with Gay Paree, but . was distanced, for- galloping past the post. ' • -//- • ' Having apparently been struck* by one of the night trains, a valuable, brood mare, live' years old, by■ Drusus—Queen Cole, owned by Mr B. Grice, of Winslow, was recently , found dead on the . railway line near the Winslow Railway Station., The mare, which was-'a half-sister toColene Pointer, and. had a foal by Travis Ax worthy; -had broken out: of a. paddock. For the 1932-33 season.; the Canterbury Park Trotting Club paid to the Government in taxes the amount 0f£3141 sa_.6d, which was made up as follows:—-Totali-sator £2885 4s Bd, dividends £3154 Us, stakes £278.55, amusement : tax £97 13s, income tax- £146 13s 4d, land tax £ll 14s 6d—a total of J 6574 Is 6d, from, which the .amount of £3432.16s was recovered from dividends and owners. .. ... F. J. Smith, having 37 wins to -his credit, in the winning trainers’- list,, his position looks unassailable, especially .as he wilt be strongly represented at the Waikato Trotting Club’s meeting. • - In the event of his topping the list, it will be the first occasion on which a North Island trainer has done so. He is ;also leading in the winning reinsmen’s ' list ,wiht 3o suMeseuu lkgfc £ew meet inKS held by -the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club ,at Addington,, the mile..and a-hait trotters’ races as well ..as -the remainder of the events had attached to the conditions of the race the assessed clause. It was found that the inclusion of such a condition in that particular type of race was prejudicing a good entry, and it will be noticed that the. conditions for the slower class trotters’ races to be decided at the August fixture on Abe first and second day, are for horses that can do 3min 32sec or better, while on the third day the class is the, same, but is confined to -horses which Have_ been assessed on that mark or better. Inc unrestricted condition's on the first, and second days will probably enable seyerai horses to' become eligible fop the concluding day’s event.’ On the opening day there is also tin? Advance Handicap for four-year-olds, which • is not affected by the assessed conditions, that race being for horseg that can do 2min 59sec or better for a mile and a-quarter. In view of the challenge of Mr L. S. Martin, owner of the Australian pacing champion, to match his horse against any trotter or pacer in the world, the following circular issued by the New South' Wales Trotting Club will be read with interest: —•'*Mr ,L. S. Martin has indicated that-he is prepared to match his champion ' pacing -stallion, Walla Walla, against any pacer or trotter. ih the world for the sum of five hundred pounds > sterling (£500), and has lodged his cheque for this amount -at the pfece of the New South Wales Trotting Club. Conditions: The match to take place on the Harold Park Racecourse, under the rules and control of the-New, South Wales Trotting Club, and to be decided by the best two of three heats over a mile, with a move-up start, and to be held hot later than September 18, 1933. The respective owners to draw for positions, (he winner of the draw starting from the inside position in the first heat and from number two position in the second heat; a further drawior positions to be made in the third heat should such be necessary.” Mr E. F. C. Hinds, owner, of Harold Logan, has been communicated with by the New South Wales Trotting Club, intimating that should he feel disposed to accept the challenge, that club, in view of the distance involved, would probably be prepared to open negotiations with him regarding the making of a reasonable contribution towards the cost of taking his horse to Sydney. Mr Hinds, in hie reply, wrote that he was not at present inclined to take Harold Logan out of New Zealand, but should his horse be fit and well he might consider a proposition about the end of the year. ■
