"IL TROVATORE"

Outstanding soloists, bright costumes, special scenery, and a strong chorus and ballet should make the Dunedin- Grand Opera Club's presentation of " 11 Trova* tore " something to bo remembered for a long time. Mr Hubert Carter, the brilliant Christchureh tenor, whose experience in London and abroad has made him a most finished artist, will sing the role of " Manrico." Miss Gaynor Eaape, whose artistry and beauty of voice has been a feature of the rehearsals, will be the Leonora of the season, and the Work of these two artists, in their many scenestogether should be of a : very high standard. Astaena, the old Gipsy, who is really the centre of the story, - will ,be played alternatively by Miss Phyllis Clare and Miss Jess M'Millan. The Count of Mr Arthur Macdonald is an unusually fine characterisation. His ringing baritone, his ease of singing even the top notes in the difficult music allotted his part, and his fine personality on the stage make him a dominating figure. He and Mr Alexander M'Dowoll, as Captain of the Guard, are working very well together. The ballet for the Gipsy scene has been supplied by the Rena Clavering School of Dancing (Miss M. Tuckwell, principal). Miss Dorothy Mackay and Miss Mary "Belcher will alternate the part of Inez, and great interest centres in the costume for this part, as the dress is an original of sreat age. Smaller parts are being filled by Mr E. Paris and Mr J. B. Watt.
