SEARCH FOR SILVER

PROTEST BY SEAMEN'S UNION STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON. June 28. A strong protest against the searching of the Marama for silver and the practice of searching intercolonial ships between New Zealand ports was made by the president of the Seamen's Union (Mr Walsh) to-day. He said that official representations would be made in the matter. He said that silver could be in the possession of any member of the crew for the payment of a debt in a New Zealand port, and also, if a member of the crew had more than £2 of his wages in silver on board ship when it was searched before leaving its final New Zealand port the money could be seized. If a ship leading Wellington for Auckland could be searched, Mr Walsh said, there was no reason why passengers leaving by rail could not have their luggage searched. Another matter that called for protest was that it had been learned that the Matson Line vessels at Auckland were not being searched. In connection with this statement by Mr Walsh the Evening Post is given to understand that the search for silver at Auckland on a bisr scale began only last week with the Wanganella, and. no American vessel has arrived since that took place. THE KAREPO SEARCHED NO TRACE OF SILVER. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 28. The Karepo was searched for silver this morning before leaving Wellington, for Newcastle, but the search proved fruitless. ",
