SMOKING IN RESTAURANTS

• TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Your correspondents " Nicotine " and •'Disgusted" are to be thanked for ventilating a distinct grievance by drawing attention to the objectionable habit of recent years of smoking in restaurants and tea rooms. It may be due to simple thoughtlessness on the part of the offenders. Nevertheless, they, having enjoyed their meal, proceed to complete their enjoyment with a puff or two, quite oblivious of the effect on the people at the next table, who are just commencing their meal. Against the habit of smoking I have nothing to say. But what is objectionable is to have one's food permeated with cigarette smoke from those who have been fortunate enough to finish eating. I wish, therefore, to add my protest against this practice which is so objectionable to those nearby who are in process of enjoying their cup of tea. There is, of course, a time and place for everything. Perhaps the various proprietors could agree among themselves to set aside either a separate compartment or section of their restaurant for the convenience of smokers, or better still, tc? prohibit smoking inside* Otherwise I .should like to appeal to those who would desire to act the " lady " and " gentleman" to evidence even a tinge of regard for the old-fashioned golden rule, " Do unto others, etc." —I am, etc., Dunedin, June 28. Fair to Aix.
