WAITAKI HYDRO NOTES

NEW ZEALAND LEGION. Mr J. Tnrnbull occupied the chair at the Waitaki Hydro meeting of the New Zealand Legion on Tuesday evening. The speakers were Mr J. C. Kilkness and Dr E. E. Butler, of Oamaru. The first speaker, in his opening remarks, said that the legion, during its short life since its inception in FcbruaVy last, bad grown Dominion wide. Contrary to popular belief it was not opposed to the Labour Party, or any party, but was opposed to party government and party politics. It would be opposed by men who were great party men, bub the time had, come for a change. Contrary to belief, also, Dr Campbell Begg was not the founder of the legion. A ( body of men in the Wairarapa district in search of an organiser found in Dr Begg a man who had the capacity of expounding their view. The legion was non-political, and was enrolling men of all shades of political opinion. Mr Kirkness and Dr Butler also explained the method of the election of the council, which would be situated in Wellington. At the conclusion of the meeting the speakers were accorded a very hearty vote of thanks. HARE SHOOT. Although weather conditions were not the best a party of 28 guns travelled to Ashbridge (Haka Valley), the property of Mr Alexander Fraser, where a successful hare drive was held. When the tally was taken there was a total of 370 hares, the largest bag being 34.
