TEST FOOTBALL

THE ASSOCIATION CODE NEW ZEALAND AGAIN DEFEATED > (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) SYDNEY, June 24. (Received June 25, at. 6.30 p.m.) Australia beat New Zealand in the third Association test at the Sydney Cricket Ground to-day by four goals to two. Bitterly cold weather affected the attendance, only 1000 spectators being present. The teams were; New Zealand.—Zuill (goal), Stone, Gerrard, Stenhouse, Christie, Graham, Ives, Chapman, Kershaw, Groves, Kay. Australia.—M‘Nabb (goal), Laidlaw, Evans, Osborne, Taylor, O’Connor, F. Smith, Edwards, G. Smith, Cameron, Crowhurst. The New Zealanders gave their best exhibition of the tour, and the scores do not indicate the play, which was of an even nature. The old trouble of failing to seize chances near the goalmouth was responsible for the defeat of New Zealand, the inside forwards lacking dash, though they combined well, Kay, on the wing, played his usual spectacular game, but shot too much at the net instead of passing to his inside men. Australia was the first to score, Edwards catching a rebound from Zuill and netting. At half time the score was; Australia 1 goal, New Zealand nil. Australia scored their second goal when Crowhurst, running in from the right wing, tricked Gerrard and the custodian/- A determined effort by New Zealand followed to prevent the test “ hat trick.” Kershaw opened the tourists’ account with a nice goal, Ives, on the wing, being mainly responsible for the opening. The excitement was intense when New Zealand got a penalty kick in front, and Kershaw again succeeded. Smith, the Australian centre, came into the picture with a brilliant goal, heading the bajl into the net from a corner kick. Smith again netted when Zuill misjudged a run from the goal mouth in an attempt to clear. Smith netted into an open goal. There was no further score. The New Zealand forwards played good football, but lacked the understanding evident in the local combination. Gerrard and Stone were giants in defence. Zuill, except for one mistake, was really-brilliant. It was a good, clean game, played in fine spirit. Crowhurst was outstanding for the winners. Christie has slowed down, although he is still a great tactician. Goals were scored by G. Smith (two), Edwards; and Crowhurst for Australia; and by Kershaw (two —one penalty) for New Zealand.
