KAIKORAI v. ZINGARI-RICHMOND

Play was fairly fast, and the ball travelled up and down the field until Zingari broke through to the Kaikorai line, but an infringement, gave relief when a try seemed certain. Play went to the other end, where Francis secured from a scrum and passed to Laing, to Miller, who raced round to score behind the posts. Francis was successful with the kick. Kaikorai 5 points, Zin-gari-Richmond nil. Shortly after Laing made an opening, and Cameron sent to Johnston, who lost possession. Cameron secured again, however, and scored at the corner. Francis failed with the kick. Kaikorai 8 points, Zingari-Richmond nil. After further play in midfield, Zingari broke away, Caradus and Procter taking part in a nice passing rush, which was' spoiled by a forward pass. From a scrum Francis sent out to Laing, to Cameron, to Kean, who scored at the corner, Drew’s kick failing. Kaikorai set up a nice passing movement, which broke down when Kean failed to take a pass from Cameron. Kaikorai transferred play to Zingari’s line, but a free kick gave relief. Emanuel, lost a good chance by holding on to the ball too lon<; after making a break from a scrum. The Blues opened out in passing at halfway, but Mowat failed to take the ball on two occasions. Williamson marked well in the fqce of a Blue forward rush, but University returned to the attack, and Pickard had a shot at goal from a penalty at the twenty-five flag, the ball failing to rise. Nicholson found the line inside, the Alhambra twenty-five, but the Alhambra forwards rushed play upfield, where Davis sent the ball out from a scrumto Griffen to Dodds, who punted. Fumbling by the Blue backs placed their side in trouble, but Favenc-Chin saved. Davis marked on the touch line, and kicked across field, where a penalty gave the same player a fairly easy chance to kick a goal, but be missed. The play was of a very ragged nature, and attempts by both sides to open up the game usually broke down before getting far. Quill broke away in good style from halfway, and the half time whistle went with play in the University twenty-five. University attacked at the opening of the second spell. Griffen cut in well when the Alhambra backs were opening out in passing at halfway, and got to the Blues twenty-five before being blocked, but Ryder sent the Red and Blacks back with long kicks to touch. The Alhambra forwards in a series of loose rushes carried play into University territory, where they gave the ball from a scrum to Davis, who sent his backs away. Taylor missed his pass and lost a good opportunity of scoring. Cahill put his side on attack with a long penalty kick to touch. The Blue backs came away with a sweeping rush, and Jolly put in a strong run to the Alhambra twenty-five, where he passed to Mowat, who was well taken by Williamson. Play swung across field, and Ryder and Pavene-Chin both tried to break through, but the Alhambra defence was sound. Cahill cleared, and a period of even play followed at halfway. From a scrum Emanuel sent out to Ryder, to Roy, who cut through the defence and ran to Williamson. Jolly came up fast and took the ball to go , over under the posts. Pickard converted. University 10 points, Alhambra 3 joints. University attacked again, hut Cahill and then Harris relieved with punts to touch. The Alhambra forwards took play into the Blues’ territory, but Mowat came back with a strong run. Butler led several Red and Black rushes which took play to the University twentyfive. Emanuel came round the side of a scrum and found the line, and a minute later Taylor was caught with the ball close to his corner flag, being lucky to get the ball into touch. The University backs made several attempts to cross, Mowat being grassed on two occasions at the end of Blue passing. Eventually, from a, scramble on the line, Boyes forced his way across. The attempt to convert was a failure. The game ended a minute later with the scores:— University B .. .. .. 13 points. Alhambra 3 points, Mr L. E. Maeassey was the referee. SOUTHERN v. UNION Southern had no difficulty in defeating Union in the match at,Logan Park, the excellent combination and vigorous attacking methods of the Southern backs being too strong for the weaker team. The final score of 19 points to nil in Southern’s favour was a true indication of the state of the game, for there were very few occasions on which Union threatened Southern’s line to any extent. The following were the teams:— Southern. —Backs—Trevathan, Nisbet, Bolton, Dickey, Wilson, Sutherland, Simon; forwards—Edwards, Hore, Turner, Strachan, Parker, M‘Donald, Niven, Roberts. Union.—Backs —R. Silver, M’Cullough, Gensik, L. Silver, Werner, Gapes, Burgess: forwards —Plawn, Garside, Morgan, Collier, Kirkwood, Grant, V. Gensik, M‘Donald. In the first few minutes of the game Union packed hard and succeeded in invading Southern’s territory, but a loose rush by the Southern forwards swept play hack to Union’s twenty-five, where it remained for a period, in which the stubhorn Union defence was proof against the Southern attacks. An infringement hy Union gave Bolton a chance, and he kicked a good penalty goal. Southern 3, Union nil. Southern renewed the attack, and again Union were compelled to defend strenuously, the forwards putting in some good work. Southern were not to be denied, however, and shortly afterwards Dickey rounded off a fast attacking movement by scoring wide out. The kick failed. Southern 6, Union nil. Further vigorous play ensued in Union’s territory, the latter team being unable to clear, and from a ruck near the 25-yard i line Dickey snapped up and scored a good try wide out. Trevathan’s kicked failed. Southern 9. Union nil. The remainder of the spell was completed without further score, Southern keeping play in Union’s twenty-five throughout. On the resumption Qie Union backs made a brief attacking movement, which broke down before it had gained much ground, and play again swung into Union’s twenty-five. After a short period of somewhat uninteresting play, Sutherland secured the ball from a scrum and potted a good goal. Southern 13, Union nil. Soon afterwards, following a series of attacks, which kept Union bird pressed, Nisbet crossed at the corner.

Trevathan’s kick failed. Southern 16, Union nil. Union made desperate endeavours to carry play into their opponents’ territory, but they could not stand up against the superior combination and dash shown by Southern, and for some time play was confined to Union’s twentyfive, where only a vigorous defence prevented Southern from crossing on numerous occasions. Eventually, after Union had succeeded in driving Southern back to about halfway, Bolton secured the ball and made a great dash down the field to score under the posts. The kick went wide. Southern 19, Union nil. During a spell of tight play Wilson was injured, and was compelled to leave the field, his place being taken by Morrison. In the dying stages of the game Union made a great bid to score, and for a time kept Southern on the defensive, although the position was seldom dangerous. An opportunity was given R. Silver,, when a penalty kick was awarded in a fairly handy position, but the ball went wide and the chance was lost. The game ended shortly afterwards with the score:— Southern Iff points. . Union .. Nil. Mr W. Baxter was the referee.
