In her latest E< » picture, “The Woman in Room 13,” vvhicu will be shown at Rare furly on Wednesday night, Elissa Laudi is supported by three of the screen’s most popular leading men. They are Ralph Bellamy, Neil Hamilton, and Gilbert Roland. Another popular player in this photoplay is Myrna Loy, known for her exotic, siren roles. “ The Woman in Room 13 ” revolves around the dramatic theme of who was the woman in the concert singer's room the night he met his strange death. It is based on the well-known Broadway play of the same name.
MAJESTIC PICTURES “ The Sign of ,the Cross, 5- which will be shown finally to-night, is, first ami foremost, a spectacle of pagan Rome, reaching its fullest expression in a Homan holiday at the Circus Maximus, where the gladiatorial contests and all the games that delighted Nero serve as a prelude to the sacrifice of the Christians to the lions. But it is also a dramatic story of Christian persecution, and a tenderly beautiful love story of a Christian girl and a Roman patrician, wdiose roles are played with rare beauty by Elissa Landi ami Fredric March. It is Charles Laughton’s Nero, however, which is not only the outstanding characterisation ot the film, but one of the memorable characterisations of all times_ Here is acting that approaches genius. Claudette Colbert, as the famous_ Empress Poppaea, gives a performance of remarkable depth and power. SCOTTISH SOCIETY’S DANCE The weekly dance held by the North Otago Scottish Society was well patronised on Saturday night, and a pleasant time was spent in dancing to good music supplied by Mrs Shcrwin’s orchestra. A varied programme of dances had been arranged, and supper added to the success of the eve'ning. Messrs G. C. Craig and R. Lambie carried out the duties of M.C. .. LADIES’ HOCKEY DANCE Seventy couples were present at the weekly dance conducted by the North Otago Ladies’ Hockey Association in the Ribble Street Hall on Saturday night, the members of the visiting Palmerston team being the guests of the evening The Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss M'Grath and partner The floor was in excellent order for dancing, and good music was provided by Rae’s orchestra. Messrs B Blair and H W. Thomas carried out the duties of M.C.
