CHESHIRE CHEESE

MASS MEETING OF MAKERS FACING RUIN. (From Oub Own Correspondent.) LONDON, May 12. Demands for greater protection for the Cheshire cheese-making industry were made recently at a mass meeting of Cheshire cheese producers, held at the Whitchurch Town Hall. Prominent landowners, cheese-makers, and leaders of the Cheshire Cheese Federation emphasised the fact that the home producers of cheese were facing ruin. -

Tiie chairman (Major C. VV. TomkinRon Tarporley) said the industry was suffering from a sense of grave injustice. The farm-made cheese industry was faced with ruin. The depreciation of the rate of exchange by the New Zealand Government was a breach of the Ottawa agreement. It gave the New Zealand cheese producer a subsidy. Mr T, C. Goodwin (chairman of the Executive Committee of the federation) said the prices for cheese to-day were the lowest for 40 years. The federation proposed that the Farmers’ Union scheme should be so amended as to allow any cheese producer, who elected to do so, to claim recognition as a licensed cheesemaker. A vote of confidence in the federation and approval of the action it had taken was adopted.

A resolution that ’ all cheese-makers should register under the scheme as milksellers, so as to have a right to vote when the poll of milk producers is taken under the Marketing Act, was also adopted. The Cheshire branch of the National Farmers’ Union at Crewe passed a resolution pressing the Government to give the same economic justice to primary producers in agriculture as had already been given to other industries, and also urging the Ministry of Agriculture to give immediate attention to the serious position of cheese-makers and “by immediate restriction of imports of cheese and all dairy products to save them from absolute ruin.”
