DRUIDISM. The Lily of the Valley Lodge > held its half-yearly installation of officers on Wednesday last. A.D. Bro. Robertson presided over a good attendance., A considerable amount of correspondence was dealt with. A number of members was reported to be on the sick list, and payment passed. Two candidates sought admission and were received, the ceremony being impressively delivered by the officers. P.D.P. Bro. E. Reeves and P.D.P. Bro. Brockie acted as installing officers in the absence of D.P. Bro. Morris, who had been, called away to the North Island. After the officers bad returned thanks a vote of ‘thanks and appreciation was accorded the retiring A.D., Bro. Robertson, for the efficient manner in which he had discharged his duties while in the chair. P.G.G. Bro. B. Reid gave the U.F. Societies Dispensary report and received a vote of thanks. Several committee reports were received. The installing officers returned thanks for the vote accorded them. Arrangements were made for the reception of the officers of the Rose of Palmerston and St. Patrick’s Lodges who intimated their intention of visiting the Lily next meeting. The fifty-third anniversary of the opening of Otago Lodge was held last Monday evening when Arch Druid Bro, Shepherd presided over a large ’attendance of members and visitors. Invitations were received and accepted from the Royal Arch Chapter and Royal Oak Lodge. The bards reported on the members visited, and the recovery from sickness of several members was received with! pleasure and a hearty welcome was ex-; tended to Bro. Bryant on his first visit since his recent illness. After business was concluded the lodge adjourned for the purpose of entertaining visitors and Begg’s orchestra, under Bro. Hamburg, contributed a first-class programme of musical and elocutionary itqms, the contributing artists being Misses V. Wyatt and A. George, and Messrs F. Watt, C. Paine, and M. Joel. On Tuesday, June 13, A.D. Bro. Meiklejohn presided over a splendid meeting of 32 members,, one of the most encouraging musters from a numerical point of view that. Rose of Palmerston has had for some time. Standard orders were suspended for the purpose of initiation. Other ' visitors were Bros. O’Dea (Linden) and Logie (Mistletoe). , At the conclusion of the initiation ceremony, which was carried out in a most solemn and impressive manner by the Ross Stewart team, ordinary business was resumed. Despite inclement weather, a good attendance of members greeted A.D. Bro. Morrison at Linden Lodge on Tuesday evening. Owing to the fact that D.P. Bro. Morris was away on business, he was compelled to appoint Bro. E. Reeves, P.D.P., of Ivanhoe Lodge, to carry out his duties. A lengthy correspondence list was dealt with, and the only business requiring attention was sick pay and accounts, which _y*ere passed without discussion. Permission having been received from the Grand Lodge to hold a public installation of officers, the lodge adjourned and admitted a good number of lady friends and supporters of the lodge, P.D.P. Bro, Reeves, assisted by P.A. Bro. T. Jenkins, carried out the ceremony in an impressive and able manner. Bro. W. Duff moved a vote of thanks to the installing officers and, on behalf of the newly-installed officers, Bro. H. Tyrrell, V. returned thanks. . I PROTESTANT ALLIANCE. The quarterly meeting-of the Triumph Lodge, No. 9, was held on June 15. The W. (Bro. G. A. Perrin) presided, and was assisted by the P.M. (Bro. G. Hellyer), Chaplain Bro. Matheson, and D.M. Bro. J. -Weir. There was a very good attendance of members. There was a large number of visitors. Therq was a large amount of correspondence dealt with. It was decided to take part in the W.F.S. annual church service. Two new members were proposed. The Sick Visitors’ Committee reported on its visits and claims were passed for payment to the' amount of £lB 13s 4d. The roll was called. The Social Committee gave its quarterly report, and Bro,, W, G. Robb was appointed delegate on the District Tug-of-war Committee. ( The secretary was instructed to forward a letter of thanks and appreciation to the editor of Brotherhood, P.G. Chaplain Bro. Arnold. The receipts of the evening were £6B 17s 4d. A very pleasant social hour was then spent. “The Visitors” were toasted, suitable replies being made. The fortnightly meeting of the Pride of the Valley Ladies’ Lodge was held on Tuesday. The W.M. (Sis. Currie) presided, and was assisted in the opening exercises of the 1 lodge by the, chaplain and her officers. There was a moderate attendance of . members, and also several visitors. The usual routine • business of the lodge was carried out. One new candidate was initiated into the lodge, the ceremony being conducted by the W.M. and her officers in a very efficient,manner. It was decided to combine the juvenile girls with the adults in the meantime, until suitable arrangements could be made for them. Four new members were initiated by the juveniles. Sister Robson, M.M., of the Loyal Excelsior Juvenile Lodge, was accorded a hearty welcome, and thanked the W.M. on behalf of her lodge. A social hour was then spent in song and storie*. The fortnightly meeting of the Valley True Blue Juvenile Lodge was held on Tuesday. The W.M. (Bro. William) presided, and was supported by his officers. Sister Morgan congratulated the boys on their visit to Loyal Excelsior, as also did P.M. Bro. Sutherland and P.M. Bro. Drysdale. A fine set of gavels for the use of the lodge was received from Bro. Morgan, and .was very much appreciated. The boys were then entertained at games. Valley True Blue held its quarterly meeting on Tuesday. The W,M., Bro.. Groves, presided over a very large attendance of members and visitors. The W.M., Bro. Groves, welcomed the visitors. The Sick Committee reported on the sick, and all claims were passed for payment. Three candidates were admitted into the Order, the initiation ceremony being conducted by the W.M., who, was assisted by his officers and a visiting W.M., the G. M. giving the final address. One candidate was proposed for membership. The quarterly accounts were passed for payment. Correspondence was dealt with from the W.F.S. Council regarding the annual church service, and it was decided that the lodge take part. A vote of thanks was accorded to the visitors for their presence. A social hour was then spent, and the visitors were given an opportunity to reply to their welcome. The quarterly meeting of the Loyal Excelsior Lodge was held on Wednesday, when Bro, J. C. Lindsay, W.M., presided, assisted by Chaplain Bro, H. A. Christie in the opening of the lodge. There was a full staff of officers and a good attendance of members. W.G.M. Bro. J. Harvey and Grand Executive officers paid an official visit and were cordially welcomed to the meeting. Five new members were initiated into tho society, the ceremony being ably carried out by the W.M. and his officers, while two further, nominations were received for , membership. Sick pay amounting to £l6 was passed for payment. Quarterly accounts amounting to £65 were also passed. W.M. Bro. J. C. Lindsay conveyed the thanks of the lodge to Bro. Robson for the fine set of officers’ regalia which he had presented to the Juvenile Lodge. RW.G. Bro. Harvey conveyed the thanks of Grand Executive. Bro. Robson suitably replied. Tho Rev. Bro. Armstrong proposed a vote of thanks to the visitors, which was suitably responded to.

The first meeting of the Loyal Excelsior Juvenile Lodge was held on Wednesday evening. W.M. Sis G. Robson presided. Prior to commencing the business of the evening, Bro. I. Robson presented to the W.M. a beautiful set of officers’ regalia, and, in doing so, expressed the hope that the lodge would prosper. P.M. Bro. R. Drysdale, of No. 11 Lodge, invested the officers with the regalia. Considering that this was their first meeting, the initiation of a new member was very ably carried out by the officers. P.M. Bro. Drysdale intimated that he would give a medal to the lodge to be presented to the member introducing most members up to Christmas. This was accepted with thanks by the W.M. on behalf of the lodge. MANCHESTER UNITY. During the week a number of lodges have held their half-yearly summoned meetings at which the installation of officers has been conducted and the attendances at the various meetings have been most encouraging. At the Loyal Valley Lodge on Monday evening the N.G, Bro. J_. Scott, "welcomed a large gathering of members and visiting brethren, including the P.G.M., Bro. R. S. Jack and P.P.G.M. Bro. C. L. Calvert The election of officers for the half-year resulted as follows: —N.G., Bro. J. Macdonald; V.G., Bro. F. Hogg; E.S, Bro. S. Ombler; warden, Bro. R. C. M’Farlane; guardian, Bro. A. A. Pond; G.M., Bro.

J. Scott. In addressing the new officers Bro. Calvert referred to the fact that the lodge would shortly celebrate its jubilee, and the new N.G. would have heavy responsibilities, but he was sure ' that "he would prove equal to the occasion, with the support and co-operation of the members. The P.G.M. Bro. Jack also spoke on district matters and outlined conditions relating to ritual working in connection with the annual efficiency shield competition for which the lodge decided to enter. P.P.G.M. Bro. Robson, in proposing a hearty vote of thanks to the district officers, referred to the capable manner in which they had carried out the installation, the motion being carried by acclamation. P.G. Bro. G. Macdonald was appointed representative on the Handbook Committee and P.G. Bro. W. Jones added to the Jubilee Committee. During the evening one nomination for membership was received. The half-yearly meeting of the Loyal Hand and Heart Lodge drew a large attendance of,members on Tuesday evening, N.G. Bro. Armstrong presiding. Business dealt with under the ordinary meeting included correspondence, and the reports of the sick visitors. The Loyal Valley Lodge requested a debate at the latter’a meeting on July 17, but this date proving unsuitable it was agreed to postpone the debate to July 31. The principal business of the summoned meeting was the election of officers for the halfyear, the following being appointed:— N. 6., Bro. A. Jenkins; V.G., R. Dickison; E.S., A. Williams; G.M., H. Armstrong; warden, S. Lyon; guardian, S. Bisiand. The district officers later attended and were welcomed by the N.G. afterwards installing the, new officers. In responding, to the toast, the district officers congratulated the new officers. P.D.G.M. Bro. R. Hart also conveyed greetings from the Tuapeka Pioneer (Lawrence) Lodge. Visitors from the city lodges were present, also representatives from 'Kaitangata and Dalton (Balclutha) Lodges. Touching on the new hall, Bro, Sligo, district treasurer, stated that they were receiving many inquiries as to the date of completion, but he regretted he was unable to state a specific date. However, the building was well under way, and members would be pleased to know that it would be comfortable and well appointed. He would like 'to see members rally round the, lodge in the new hall and make it the centre of Oddfellowship in Dupedin. Before concluding the meeting a vote of thanks was .accorded the district officers and visiting brethren who assisted in the installation.

. The Loyal Prince of Wales Lodge met at Port Chalmers on Wednesday evening when there was a good attendance of members and visiting brethren, N.G. Bro. M'Cormack in the chair. The P.G.M., Bro. E. S. Jack, and P.P.6JJ, Bro. C. L. Calvert, representing the District Executive were welcomed and carried out the installation of officers. The new officers are: N.G., Bro, A. Eobb, V.G., H. Williamson; E.S., M'Donaldj warden, J. D. Neill; guardian, , J. C. Osborne; G.M., Bro. M'Cormack. The officers were congratulated by the district officers and'. suitably responded. . Bro. Calvert extended personal congratulations ' to the new. N.G., who was, most conscientious and fully deserving of the confidence reposed in him by members. Bro. Calvert stated that the district officers had had a busy round of installations during the week, and during the week-end they would be visiting Eanfurly to attend the inauguration of an initiaiton competition amongst the lodges in Central Otago. It was also announced that an anonomyous donor had presented, a shield for competition amongst the northern lodges in and around the Oamairu district. The lodge decided to enter for the .Efficiency Shield competition, P.S. Bro. Johnston stating; that although they ' entered .every year, he would like ■ to see a special. effort made this win the shield' during Bro. Jack’s hceupancy of the chief chair of the district. A well-known .member of the lodge, P.P.GLM. Bro. A. Cable, who had been on the sick list for some time, sent his best wishes to the lodge, and satisfaction was expressed at his improvement in health. Among visitors were members of the Loyal Albion and Pride of Kaitangata Lodges, P.G. Bro. Robertson, of the latter-lodge arid recently of Greymouth, giving an. interesting account of the, doings. of the Order on the West Coast. Before closing the meeting congratulations were extended to P.G. Bro. J. Clarke, who, in a recent examination for electrical , wiremen, obtained the highest marks for the/Dominion. On Tuesday evening the Loyal Princess Mary Lodge held its fortnightly meeting in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Forbufy corner, the N.G., Sis. D. Graveson,, in the chair. After correspondence had been dealt with the members' of ,the juvenile lodges were ■ admitted. The N.G. welcomed the hoys and hoped they would spend , a pleasant evening. The programme for the evening was games, following which the visitors were entertained to supper. ■ A duet was contributed by. Sis.J. Meiklejohn and Sis. i E. Parker. : Before the juveniles retired, the, V.G; of the Loyal Caversham Juvenile Lodge thanked the lodge for its hospitality. Two new members were initiated during the evening, and one proposition for member-' ship received. Nominations were taken ;for offices, the installation having been, .postponed until June 27 in order to avoid clashing with the meeting of the Hand and Heart'Lodge. At the conclusion of the meeting the combined Social Committees of the Caversham and Princess Mary Lodges held a meeting to. discuss arrangements for the forthcoming visit of the Oaraaru lodges. The death is reported at Leamington (England) of P.P.G.M. Bro. E. H. Bailey, i who for close on ,35 year s edited the Oddfellows’ Magazine. Bro. Bailey was a specialist on friendly society, 1 Labour, and industrial questions, and in addition to the A.M.C, of the Order, he regularly attended the annual gatherings of kindred friendly societies, the annual meetings of the National Union Of Teachers :and, trades union congresses. His work itookj him frequently abroad, and. he attended a number of international congresses on the Continent. For many years he was the Labour correspondent of the Daily Telegraph, and more recently a special correspondent of The Times and the Financial Times, in addition to which ho contributed regularly to a number of leading newspapers in England, The many volumes of the magazine produced under his editorship will render the work of the future historians of the Order a simple task, so faithful is the record he has left in their pages, Bro. Bailey in December last had expressed his intention of resigning from the editorship after, the July, 1933, issue, and his decision to,retire was received with great regret by the directors of the Order, who placed on record their sincere appreciation of' the valuable' services he had rendered for nearly 35 years. - ODDFELLOWSHIP. At the last meeting of Pioneer Lodge N.G. Bro. F. Bohm occupied the chair, there being a large attendance of members and visitors. Correspondence was received from the district secretary intimating the date of next meeting and soliciting support from Pioneer." An invitation was received ' from Leith Lodge to attend its next meeting, when Bro. Ritchie' would be in charge. The meeting was adjourned, and, the District Committee being in attendance, the card tournament was proceeded with. Teams were present from) Leith and Maori Hill Lodges,; and a’very i pleasant hour was spent. The. play resulted in a two-point win for Pioneer, Leith scoring one point. Bro. J. Dunn was appointed as coach for the initiatory competition team, and arrangements were made to hold regular rehearsals. The following responded:—D.D.G.M. Bro. A. C. Beveridge, N.G. Bro. J. Kennedy (Leith), P.G. Bro. G. Smart (Linden), Secretary Bro. H. Chettleburgh (Maori Hill). A large attendance of members and visitors greeted the N. 6., Bro. J. Kennedy. at the last regular meeting of Leith : Lodge. The Visiting Committee reported .a heavy rate of sickness among members, and certified claims were passed for payment. Various matters of correspondence were dealt with, and the lodge adjourned to take part in the indoor bowling tournament. Teams representing Maori Hill and Linden Lodges were present, and play was commenced. Maori Hill tearii secured the, victory over Leith No. 1 team, while Leith No. 2 team won its game with Linden. The visitors expressed themselves' as highly pleased with the play, and voiced their appreciation of the night’s entertainment. On resuming business, arrangements were made for the forthcoming debate with Linden, Broi R. S. Kirkham being ■ appointed leader of Leith team. The N.G. extended a hearty welcome to Bro. L. D. Ritchie, who has returned from a visit to Australia on business of the Order. It was announced that Bro. Ritchie had consented to give a resume of his travels at the next meeting. The following visitors responded:—N.G. F. Bohm (Pioneer), J. MTntyre (Unity), P.G. G. H. Baker (Linden). A good attendance of members assembled at the last meeting of Maori

Hill Lodge, N.G. Bro. W. A. Jamieson occupying.the chair. The secretary reported regarding sick members, and satisfactory arrangements were made for visitations. P.G. Bro. R. Garters, of Washington Lodge, was introduced, and received a very cordial welcome. During this brother’s membership in the Order he has been instrumental in introducing over 300 members, which is estimated as a record'for New Zealand. The, meeting was then adjourned to enable the speaker for the evening to give his address. P.G.-' : Bro. J. J. Middleton- then proceeded to address the meeting, and gave a very in-’ teresting discourse on the gold mining and dredging activities of the nineties.' The_ speaker, who himself had actual experience in those times, was in a position to have first-hand knowledge, and his description of the methods adopted and the. results obtained was full'of interest. Bro. Middleton was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, and members ex- ■ pressed their appreciation of his efforts to entertain. Replying to the toast of “The Visitors,”' P.G. Bro. Garters expressed his pleasure at the reception- he had received, and gave some interesting information in regard to the working of the Order in the, Canterbury district.
